Today is a very solemn day. It is a day of mourning. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, he’ll be laid to rest. We pray for his soul. The thing that I remember most about him is how Pope John Paul II asked him when he was Cardinal Ratzinger, “What are you gonna do when you retire?” And Cardinal Ratzinger said, very simply, “I want to write a book about the Lord.” Cardinal Ratzinger, who goes on to follow Pope John Paul II, not to just write a book about the Lord but to witness the faith of Peter and to witness to all of us what it means to be close to Jesus.
He did so many things. He wrote so many books and he gave great orations and speeches. But the thing that everyone will remember about Pope Benedict the XVI is that he knew Jesus and he was a friend of Jesus. And so we are called to not worry about all of these crazy things that we could do in our lives but do we really care about knowing Jesus and being a friend of Jesus? Because that’s what lasts. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.

We Are Safe
23andMe has nothing on the Catholic Church. They got nothing. They have nothing on this Pentecost Sunday; Jesus Christ reminds us that we, as a church, have a genealogy that goes back to Jesus Christ. As human beings, we have a deep desire to be safe and taken care of, and it is through Jesus Christ and His church that we find this safety. All we have to do is look at Pope Leo the 14th. We look at everyone…

Keep It Simple
A couple of weeks ago, a student approached me after mass and told me, “Hey, Father, you’re homily today. It has many overly complicated words. Next time, make it simpler.” And then they left, and then I cried myself to sleep. A lot of the time, we overcomplicate things. All we have to do is make things simple. This is precisely what the apostles do in the gospel for this Sunday. Jesus told the…

The Ultimate Life Hack
Did Jesus tell us to cheat the system? Did he instruct us to falsify our tax returns? Did he give us financial advice like the mafia would? In the gospel for this Sunday. Jesus, of course, is not advocating fraud. But what Jesus is saying is that this dishonest steward was hustling, striving, putting in all this effort to make all this money. And the question is, are we hustling when it comes to Heaven? It’s easy…
