It’s getting close to Halloween. Let’s talk about fear, and I’m not talking about the “It’s a Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” kind of fear. I’m talking about the virtue of holy fear, that in the gospel for this Sunday, it says that the judge did not fear God, and that’s a bad thing, and it’s not being scared of God, he’s going to come and smite me. It’s having a beautiful reverence and love for the truth of who God is. Holy fear is when we kneel in the presence of the Eucharist. Holy fear is when I realize that I need help and I cannot do it on my own. I need our savior outside of me. Holy fear is realizing that, oh my gosh, I am held in existence by God himself. When he doesn’t have to face the fear of the Lord, which is the bottom line, it leads us closer to God and to the truth of who God is. Amen. Amen. Do not be afraid to fear God.

Don’t Take Away His Family
Today is the Feast Day of the Holy Family. And what better thing to talk about than “Fast and the Furious.” Dominic Toretto is amazing at driving fast. But he is more impressive with protecting his family. My favorite quote from the ninth movie is, “The worst thing you can do to a Toretto is take away his family.” Translate that to our faith, and oh my gosh, the worst thing that you can do to God the Father…

Treasure of All Treasures
So I just heard a man tell his future wife something crazy. In our marriage prep session, he said to his future wife that she is the treasure of all treasures, and he’s not trying to be a pirate or anything. What he’s trying to say to her is that beyond my parents, beyond my friends, beyond every single beautiful girl in the universe, I choose you first. That is truly radical, and that’s what we see in the gospel today…

The Holy Name of Jesus
So, the coat of arms in my archdiocese is epic. It shows a phoenix, which is a symbol of resurrection. And on the chest of the phoenix is the IHS, which is the holy name of Jesus. And so, in the first reading for this Sunday, Saint Peter, our first pope, heals a man by the holy name of Jesus. He can heal because of his name because Jesus’ name is mighty. In the Old Testament…
