Listen. I haven’t tried to die, so I can’t explain what I don’t know. But this is what I’m trying to say: there is a struggle in that moment of death. All hope is almost lost. And suddenly, it is clear that this person is about to die. Saint Augustine said, “We yearn for the Lord.” That yearning for God may come fully to you. At that moment, you have no more hope of anything other than the God who made you, who you are now about to see face to face, whose judgment will be passed on you. So you are trying to grip on this, where you belong. And then you start searching for God. You are ready for Him. You want to receive him. You want to be with Him because that’s your inner yearning, the only thing that will fulfill you.
