A rare Pokémon card can be worth thousands of dollars, and for one student, getting that treasure took years of saving, trading, and sacrifice.

In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus compares the Kingdom of Heaven to a treasure hidden in a field. When someone finds it, they’re willing to sell everything to gain it. That kind of desire makes us ask: what treasure are we really chasing? The Kingdom of Heaven is worth infinitely more than anything we can collect, earn, or own. It is eternity with Jesus, the greatest treasure we could ever seek.

We all have treasures.

Some are obvious: money, success, comfort, recognition, hobbies, status, security, or the things we spend years trying to obtain. Not all of these things are evil in themselves, but they reveal what we actually love and what we’re willing to rearrange our lives for.

This Gospel asks us to look honestly at our hearts and ask, “What am I really searching for?”

Fr. Tim’s reflection is not meant to shame us for enjoying ordinary things. Instead, it helps us see the difference between temporary treasures and the one treasure that lasts forever. A rare card may be valuable, but it is still just a piece of paper with an image printed on it. Jesus calls us away from storing up treasures on earth and toward the treasure that cannot be corrupted or stolen. And importantly, the Church teaches that detachment from riches is obligatory for entrance into the Kingdom of heaven, not just for some “elite” disciples, but because the kingdom demands a heart that is not finally anchored anywhere but God.

In daily life, this means paying attention to what gets our time, energy, attention, and desire. What am I willing to rearrange my life for? What am I chasing? What would I be afraid to lose?

Then we can bring that honestly to the Lord: “Jesus, help me desire Your kingdom more than anything else. Teach me to see heaven, not only as a distant reward, but as Your reign beginning now, and culminating in communion with You.”

The kingdom of heaven is not just something far away. It is God’s reign that comes near in Christ, continues through the Church, and is given to us in the Eucharist, so that communion with Jesus becomes the treasure we never stop searching for
