I am awful at chess. Like, bad. But the other thing is I try to protect all of the chess pieces on the board, which means I don’t honestly try to protect my king. This is the only thing that you need to win the game. And if you don’t have the king, you lose. Jesus Christ is trying to get this across in the gospel today. You have everything if you have Jesus and nothing else in your life. But if you don’t have Jesus, if you don’t have the king, and you are filled to the brim with worldly things, you have nothing. Protect the king. Jesus reminds us that we must protect the king no matter what is on our chessboard. And so that is my invitation for us this Sunday. No matter what you feel you may be lacking, if you have Jesus, you have everything. Don’t be like me, and protect your king. This is Spirit juice. Peace.

And so in the gospel for this Sunday, Jesus says, “The light came into the world, “but people prefer darkness to the light.” The reality is that we are all criminals. We love to keep…

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI
Today is a very solemn day. It is a day of mourning. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, he’ll be laid to rest. We pray for his soul. The thing that I remember most about him is how Pope John Paul II asked him when he was Cardinal Ratzinger, “What are you gonna do when you retire?” And Cardinal Ratzinger said, very simply, “I want to write a…
