So I’m not sure if I can say this as a priest, but King Herod sucks. In the Gospel today, King Herod is evil. He is Voldemort, he is Thanos, he is the Mind Flayer all rolled into one. All he wants to do is control everything, the Jewish people, the Roman government, even to control the God of the universe, even to the point of wanting to kill Jesus Christ. A lot of the times we can be like Herod in our hearts where we want to control God. When we say, “God this is what I want for my day. “This is what I want for my life. “God, you have to do these things in my life.” We can do so many things where we try to control God during our day or throughout our lives.
The easiest way to fight against that is realizing his plans for us. The plans that you may have for your life are probably awesome and good and holy, but the Father’s plans for you from the beginning of time, those plans are perfect.

This Is Our Battle Cry
This Sunday’s gospel is a battle cry that we are called to go into battle. Jesus says, “You are the salt of the earth.” In the ancient world, when a city was conquered, the soldiers would lay out salt everywhere, on the ground, in the streets, to destroy anything growing there. It sounds weird, but we are called as Christians to eliminate…

Let’s Share Our Desires with Jesus
One of my students here at the Newman Center, he is crushing hard on a girl. He can barely sleep. He can barely eat. Sharing all of this with me, I just asked him simply, “Have you seen any reciprocation on her part? Do you think she likes you?” And he responded very honestly, “Uh, I haven’t even hung out with her yet.” Okay, so here we go. This is…

Set Them On Fire
This Sunday’s gospel is incredible. It is Jesus Christ who is absolutely getting after it, saying to us that He has come to set the world on fire and how He wishes it was already blazing. I think a lot of the times we are not set on fire, or we forget that we have been given His love and given His Holy Spirit, that we walk around like zombies…
