Imagine yourself three years ago. What were you like? Most likely, you have grown and matured, and the vast majority of those three years were probably really ordinary; they were probably boring. We are now in ordinary time, and the Gospel is for this Sunday. The disciples begin their three-year journey with Jesus. Imagine the disciples at the beginning of this time, and imagine who they are at the end of that time; they were friends with Jesus. They spent every single day with Jesus, and the vast majority of that time with the Lord was probably really ordinary and sometimes boring, but growth happens in ordinary time. My invitation to all of you is not to be afraid of the ordinary, to embrace the ordinary, and to spend time with Jesus daily. You can become the saint that you’re called to be. Don’t be afraid of the ordinary; embrace it.

Do You Realize Jesus’ Love For You?
One of my really good friends from college just got engaged, and she’s just filled with joy. But the crazy thing is literally moments after she was engaged, the whole world who knows her knew that she was engaged because she couldn’t help but share the love that she found with her fiancé. That is exactly what happens in the Gospel…

God Is Proud Of You
There’s a powerful moment in Rocky Balboa when a wounded son is healed by the simple words of his father: “I’m proud of you.” Those words change everything. In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus does something just as striking. He praises John the Baptist. It’s a quiet but profound reminder that God doesn’t just correct or challenge us. He also delights in us. This Advent, consider a simple but healing question: When was the last time you allowed God to tell you He’s proud of you? As sons and daughters, we’re invited to receive those words and let them restore our hearts.

God’s Law and Barnacles
Okay, so let’s talk about barnacles. And I’m not talking about what SpongeBob says when he’s upset. But barnacles attach themselves to a boat or a large creature like a whale and are foreign entities. They’re not supposed to be there. In the gospel for this Sunday, Jesus is very clear about us, and how we love to create our human laws and put them in God’s law, but when we do that, we attach barnacles to…
