Purple underwear. Say one that’s right in the gospel for the Sunday. This rich man may have been wearing purple underwear. Many scripture scholars have discussed this fine linen, highlighting the absolute extravagance of this rich man’s life. And the heartbreaking thing was the wealth consumed. I need it for us in our lives. Some things consume us that take us away from Jesus. Wealth in and of itself is not bad, but as Catholics, we’re called to be detached from wealth. We’re called to be detached from the things of this world, and that can be said about many things, including sports and social media. It doesn’t consume us; we’re detached from it. This was the secret of the saints, that the things of this world are not bad. They’re not evil. The saints didn’t let these things consume them. The only path is the virtuous path. Be wealthy if you want. Win the lottery, but don’t let it consume you. Be detached.

Mary says to the servants, do whatever he tells you, and they do it because Mary has this moral authority; because of…

What Defines You
If Iron Man got rid of his suit, who would he be? Genius, billionaire, Playboy from? Okay. Yeah. He would be all of those things. But Tony Stark is more than what he does, and it’s the same for us. Our identity is not what we do, but how we work. Take those things away. Who are we? And the gospel for this Sunday. Martha is identifying with her work. Her work is good, but her identity is not her work. Her identity…

Suspicious of Joy
Ebenezer Scrooge, Severus Snape, Loki, The Grinch. What do they all have in common? They are suspicious of joy. In the gospel for this Sunday, we have the story of the famous prodigal son. The older son is suspicious of joy. He hears the party for the younger son, and instead of going out, he is suspicious of the joy happening. If they are being rejoiced over, then he must be less loved. Because the older son is suspicious…
