Trusting God with Tomorrow

Episode Summary

Do you ever find yourself waiting for something bad to happen simply because things are going well?

Life feels peaceful. Your family is doing well. Prayer is good. Things seem to be falling into place. But instead of receiving those moments with gratitude, you find yourself bracing for the other shoe to drop. Surely something difficult must be coming. Surely things can’t stay this good forever.

In this episode, the friars explore what this fear reveals about our relationship with God and our understanding of His goodness. When we live expecting tragedy, we can begin to see suffering as something inevitable that God is waiting to send our way. But is that really who God is? And what does it mean to trust His providence when we have no idea what tomorrow will bring?

The friars remind us that we are not promised an understanding of everything that happens in our lives. We don’t know what difficulties may come or how God will work through them. But we do know who He is. He is a good Father who loves us, cares for us, and remains with us. Rather than spending today worrying about tomorrow, we are invited to receive what God is giving us in the present moment and make acts of faith, hope, and love for whatever lies ahead.

Looking to St. Francis, the friars reflect on the importance of rooting our security in God’s character rather than our circumstances. Even in profound suffering, Francis continued to praise God for His goodness. His prayers remind us that God’s love, faithfulness, and presence do not change when our circumstances do.

Join us as we learn to surrender the future, remain present to the Lord, and find our peace not in knowing what will happen next, but in knowing the God who will be with us through it all.

Hey, I’m following Mary involved. Hey. I’m father innocent, and this is the pocketbook. Well, without Father Angeles. Oh, I meant that.

00:01:02:11 – 00:01:37:23
Unknown
I have a question for you guys. Ask it. Ask away. Man. Say your. Basically I want to know, like, what’s the number of stairs that with over 80%. I’m trying to think for. Okay. We’ll do. What’s the number of stairs that four out of five times you’ll walk it. If an elevator is available versus like what’s that? What’s the number of stairs where you start to be like, all right, I want to take the elevator.

00:01:38:01 – 00:02:01:01
Unknown
What’s like number of flights. Like number flights. Yeah. Yeah. Because floors are easier. I would say here’s it’s bad. And I’m gonna say, I bet you I was gonna guess you. You’re the worst. I’m gonna say it’s it’s either 1 or 2. What? Like it’s very low. Like, I was more than two floors. I’m taking the elevator.

00:02:01:03 – 00:02:24:11
Unknown
Might. Might even be one floor, to be honest with you. Here’s the thing for context. I live on the fourth floor of my house. I walk up and down the stairs of the center all the time. And so I’m getting my steps in. If there’s if there’s ever an opportunity to not do that, I will take it. So between 1 and 2, I’ll put me on one and a half solid one and a half final answer.

00:02:24:13 – 00:02:50:12
Unknown
But I have to to have your back a little bit. That is actually like a really good and helpful context of like I, I mean, apart from the running, but I, I, I walk up and down stairs. I mean, how many flights of stairs, like, say, it’s like I could a normal day, how many times up, including the friary and the how many floors are you doing?

00:02:50:14 – 00:03:21:01
Unknown
So including the friary, you center. Like how many? It’s probably 1 to 3. So it’s at least four times. So it’s 12 and then to four. So like probably it’s maybe around 18 to 20 flights of stairs a day. Yeah probably average. So that’s like I think that’s a good context. That’s that’s serious. Yeah. Yeah. So that way if, if I’m in a, in a building that says hey second floor is you’re going to second floor.

00:03:21:02 – 00:03:41:07
Unknown
Okay. So the elevator like Saint Anthony’s when I go, when I go to the visitor lounge which is the second floor at the elevator, if the elevator is there, I’ll just hop an elevator. So that’s a C. This will be a situation where, like, the never enough mentality will be not helpful. So there’s a there’s a situation here where you’re like, you know what?

00:03:41:07 – 00:04:01:19
Unknown
I’m doing a lot of stairs. That’s okay. I’m okay. And people can judge me, but I’m gonna take the elevator. Okay. Yeah. But if if if we’re being honest, you don’t live at Our Lady of the angels, and you don’t have the you center. How are you? Are you having the same relationship with the elevator? Probably. Okay. Yeah.

00:04:01:20 – 00:04:19:01
Unknown
Yeah. I’m being honest. I’m being honest. What’s the mindset, though? I say it’s one flight of stairs. I why I gotta walk up one by the stairs? If there’s this technology that brings me up that one flight of stairs. But what if it’s even, like like the walking is going to be healthier and faster.

00:04:19:03 – 00:04:36:11
Unknown
And harder. And your point? It’s. I could press a button and have this big box come transport me up stairs. That second floor. I’ll wait. Good for the innocent.

00:04:36:13 – 00:04:55:13
Unknown
I mean, yeah, I’m just. I’m more now more than ever. Like, mindful of my steps and, like, moving my body. I feel like I said a lot up here. Praying a lot, hopefully. And so like I even in airports, I don’t want to use those walker things I like, want to walk on real like the steps, you know.

00:04:55:15 – 00:05:17:18
Unknown
So it’s a similar thing with stairs. Like it’s I just think I’m in the season where I would, I would like concretely want to take steps like and now if it’s like 12 floors, that’s one thing. But if it’s like Saint Anthony’s, I’d walk it because it’s like floors. I mean, floors five. Yeah. Whatever it is, I would like six floors.

00:05:17:19 – 00:05:25:15
Unknown
Yeah. It’s like walking six. Six stairs. Yeah. Six storeys. I think that’d be good.

00:05:25:17 – 00:05:50:15
Unknown
So. So what’s the final answer? I think six as well as ask six. Six? Yeah. So. If it’s like. It’s like you’re going to walk most times six floors. Yeah. I’m just saying it’s it’s a weird thing in turn of events is that like, it’s Saint Joseph’s, right. Yeah. Like, I mean, it’s like four stairs, but like, I would, I would, I would I there’s no elevator for the record.

00:05:50:15 – 00:06:11:21
Unknown
There’s no option. But I would like it was good for me to walk the steps. Yeah. So I would walk six steps. So you come into to say again. So there’s six, four buildings. It’s the shelter you walk just in, you know, you’re going to the top floor. Somebody just got off the elevator. It’s right there. Yeah. I want to say yeah, it’s a new thing because I would like to take the easy way out.

00:06:11:21 – 00:06:27:22
Unknown
Okay. But like, I would walk it. I’m done. I think I feel good about my answer. I would walk it. But you do think if it’s eight, you’re you’re taking the elevator. I’m just saying it would discern more if there’s longer.

00:06:28:00 – 00:06:35:05
Unknown
Standing. Okay. Yeah, I would be. I questioned myself after more than six.

00:06:35:07 – 00:06:58:12
Unknown
Where are you at? StairMaster. Yeah. Dude, it it came to mind because, we do at, like, the seminary has an elevator, and I think it’s seminarians. I don’t think we. I don’t think we were supposed to use it. No, but as, part time faculty. Oh, come on, as just an old to say this. As a non seminarian, it’s different.

00:06:58:14 – 00:07:17:17
Unknown
And sometimes there’s the battle because it’s like, you know, I think, how many am I going to do? I do them more than average. I don’t especially it’s more of an efficiency thing than anything.

00:07:17:19 – 00:07:21:17
Unknown
Probably.

00:07:21:19 – 00:07:46:10
Unknown
Probably. I’m probably pretty consistent at four. But once we get to five, I don’t like, I don’t think if I, if I’m walking in the shelter and the thing’s there and I’m going to the sixth floor, I’m like, I think 95% of the time taking the elevator. Yeah, I just I know, you know, that muscle’s like, okay, give me the what are the leg, the the stair muscle.

00:07:46:12 – 00:08:08:19
Unknown
Give me. That’s okay. Okay. So so right now we have Father Innocent with sex. Father Mark Mary around four. Father pt with. I’ve already got I’ve already got my stepson. Yeah. And here’s the like. If I have to walk and I walk it, you know, there’s, I visited people in the, in the, like, in different buildings right here.

00:08:08:19 – 00:08:26:16
Unknown
Projects where the elevators out and the live on the 20th floor. And I’ve walked up. Oh, come on, that’s. Do it. That’s not the question. Yeah. We get I know, I know, I know, I said the question, but if there’s an elevator available I’m always taking the elevator. Yeah. Not just the 20 floors, but second floor. Third floor.

00:08:26:18 – 00:08:44:05
Unknown
Hey. I mean, anyway, maybe it’s different once again in a hotel because you it’s like it helps orient you, like, off the elevator where you’re going. But. Yeah, we’re on the second floor. I’m taking the elevator. So.

00:08:44:06 – 00:09:05:22
Unknown
That we get it. Okay, but there we go. I, I mean, I think it’s an interesting question. And as we saw, we had a pretty wide range of answers and reasons for it, but that’s interesting for anything you want. Even take the walker Walker thing in, the airport like the walker later it maybe get old, maybe getting old.

00:09:05:22 – 00:09:20:14
Unknown
But the thing is, we were sitting in an airplane for, like, a couple of hours, like, I. My body feels it, so I, like, need a move. I need to move my body. But you’re still moving on the walker later. I kind of not. I mean, that’s debatable. I mean, you’re moving, but, like, it’s it’s interesting because you like.

00:09:20:16 – 00:09:35:01
Unknown
But you like to get things. I feel like you’re a person who likes to go to from point A to point B quickly. Yeah, but but I do. I can take people out if I’m just walking at my normal pace around a corner, I could take people out in. Which is why I thought that you would do the walker later.

00:09:35:03 – 00:09:54:13
Unknown
And so it’s, Is that really what it’s called? It’s not. I’ve been busy dropping it because I think I think you need it works. It works the walker later, right? Yeah, I think it’s a walker later. I think that’s true. I think that’s what I think. It’s what it said on the patent. Father. Innocence. Not a let’s be honest and innocent.

00:09:54:14 – 00:10:02:10
Unknown
You’re not on the airplanes. You’re not your best self, maybe. Or in the airports.

00:10:02:12 – 00:10:26:00
Unknown
Yeah, that is so true. I’m not my best self. I can’t have a whole conversations. I’m. I’m highly medicated on Dramamine of some type. I feel horrible. I’m over like my. I’m over, like, stimulated. There’s a lot going on. I just it just it’s a tough place for me to be. Yeah. All right, last question. I mean, I know because we have to move on, but I’ve been playing this game.

00:10:26:00 – 00:10:47:05
Unknown
How late can I leave the house before, boarding the plane and not following? I said, you’re not part of this. Like, anyway, so how, like, optimally for you? How how early or how late? Like, what’s the, time frame for you to be at the airport before boarding? Like, it’s an hour or half an hour or 45 minutes.

00:10:47:05 – 00:10:57:09
Unknown
Two hours? Like what? What makes you feel comfortable? And let’s presume in this case you have to say pre-check. So it’s not going to be like a normal line. You wait on.

00:10:57:11 – 00:11:26:11
Unknown
I, I’ll go first. I’m still I was kind of always raised in the mindset of you get there two hours early, okay? And I’ve never changed that. This is domestic or international. No matter what. No matter what, no matter what. And I will say this. I have gotten more and more happy. I’m happy to be there.

00:11:26:13 – 00:11:47:22
Unknown
Six hours. Seven hours. I’m. I’m like, I have no I have no problem with being there shockingly early and just being at the airport. What is it doing? I have, you know, I have a computer. I can do what I need to do, but I’m just like, it’s like going on a walk. I’m like, not. I’m like, I’m not.

00:11:47:22 – 00:12:07:02
Unknown
I don’t have response, I guess. I mean, maybe I do have responsibilities, maybe I don’t, I can do whatever I want to get done. Okay. Yep. That’s where I’m at. Okay. I’m I’m not far behind before my flight. I can handle airport so I can be there early as possible. I want to be there early as possible.

00:12:07:04 – 00:12:24:05
Unknown
I, I, I don’t like to be rushed. I don’t like the stress of all that. So earlier to better a half an hour before my flight, I take my flight minutes. So then that’s where I start feeling bad. But I can be there hours before and just be there. Especially with the brother. I can read, I can do some computer email stuff.

00:12:24:07 – 00:12:29:10
Unknown
I’m super happy. So I’m with all the Marc Maron. This one.

00:12:29:12 – 00:12:54:08
Unknown
Pumped. Yeah, bro. You’re you’re going to be on stage. Yeah. Total spectrum I think now I’m in a new place of. I’m comfortable getting there. And this is shocking. But half an hour before boarding. What I mean you have you have whatever that is just pre-check. But I say protect. Yeah I’ve gotten this multiple times. I’ve gotten to the airport around like 45 minutes to half an hour before boarding, and I’ve made it to my gate in time.

00:12:54:10 – 00:13:15:00
Unknown
These are New York, New York, Chicago. So big ones, you count big ones? Yeah, yeah. You ever missed it? Never. Not at least not yet. There will be a time where it’s going to burn me, I’m sure, but. Yeah. Because the thing is, I can sit. So, like, if I’m traveling with either of you guys, like, I’m happy to go six at night.

00:13:15:00 – 00:13:29:10
Unknown
And so I. I’m willing to go six hours before five hours before not happy. But, especially if it’s with somebody else. Like, we could hang out at the airport, but what am I for? Me? Like, what am I going to do? Whatever I’m going to do at the airport, I could have done here with more efficiency as far as like sending emails or whatever it is I do.

00:13:29:15 – 00:13:50:17
Unknown
And I know sometimes, yeah, people will like ask me questions and stuff and it’s just the thing that to get at the house. But I just prefer to do the stuff here as opposed to doing it in the airport. So that’s a wrap for me. But that’s a good question. Great question. Thank you. Phenomenal question. Just what we’re looking for.

00:13:50:19 – 00:14:13:04
Unknown
I mean I need more of that from you. We’re at 30 minutes in. We have we have not landed on any topic like substantial topics yet. Okay. Well, Father Innocent showing his his traveling, you know, irritation we got talking about planes, getting a little grumpy just first off, the. Yeah. Anyway, so, guys, here’s the question I have.

00:14:13:06 – 00:14:19:22
Unknown
And thank you, father, because what this really comes down to is trust.

00:14:20:00 – 00:14:31:04
Unknown
So here’s the thing. And I think we’ve all come across this, a lot of times in different places. And basically it’s the it’s the it’s the person who has this situation of.

00:14:31:06 – 00:14:52:14
Unknown
You know what? Things are going pretty good or things have always gone pretty good, or you know what, like I’ve never really had any like really great tragedy in my life. So my mindset is because things are good now, I just know something bad is going to happen or because things I have, I’ve avoided tragedy at this point.

00:14:52:14 – 00:15:18:05
Unknown
I know there’s going to be a big one on the horizon. So this idea of like, okay, things are good or have been good or prayer’s been good or life’s been good or family’s been good, and then instead of kind of like receiving that as encouragement that maybe things are can continue to be good. Instead, the interpretation of it is, well, now I know things must go, I must be imminently things going wrong.

00:15:18:05 – 00:15:37:15
Unknown
And so there’s this sort of internal bracing for the shoe to drop and this awful thing to happen. I don’t know, like, what do you guys think of can you affirm that you’ve heard that and then like, how do you respond? Like, what do you think the answer is? I will go first in this one, father. Okay.

00:15:37:15 – 00:15:55:03
Unknown
You I was I was I was expecting you to throw me under the bus again. Go for it, man. But this is going to sound like it’s going to start. Very not funny, but, like, in something that’s not serious, but to hopefully get to something serious, because I’ve experience a lot in sports. Look at my sports fandom.

00:15:55:05 – 00:16:11:03
Unknown
Right. Like you have the experience of, so I use the Knicks, for example, where every time they have a lead, you can expect that they’re gonna blow it or they’re or they’re leaving the series, like, okay, we can’t have nice things like as Knicks fan or we can’t have a as a Mets fan. I can’t have nice things because there’s I’m waiting for the shoe to drop.

00:16:11:03 – 00:16:43:05
Unknown
I’m waiting for the horrible injury. I’m waiting for these things to happen. Because this is what this is what we deserve as Knicks fans. And so, but now we’re good as far as we’re NBA champions. But just throw that there. But I do think sometimes that that can permeate our life where, yeah, we can we can have this idea that, gosh, like I either I’m in contact with people who have had difficult things happen or like, I hear about these tragedies and I look at my life as you saying, from a memory like, yeah, things have been pretty good, but you know what?

00:16:43:07 – 00:17:01:15
Unknown
God’s going to get me somehow, or there’s going to be this, this, there’s something lurking around the corner that I’m not seeing that is going to just blow up my life. And I and I just want to name that as, I guess, a real thing and just, and we’ll get into it. Probably. But always the question is like, what?

00:17:01:15 – 00:17:22:12
Unknown
Like, what is that? Like, why do I why can’t I trust why can’t I believe that? Yeah, that God is good. And even if there is something that comes that’s not good, it’s as far as like a tragedy that it’s not like God just punishing us or it’s not this place of, Well, it was bound to happen at some point in time.

00:17:22:12 – 00:17:41:08
Unknown
So therefore it’s my turn. And instead, like, what does God have for us in that mystery that we’re wrestling with the difficulty? I think it’s important for us to to sit with and be with. But. Yeah, but going back to the mentality like, why is it, you know, do I just do do I feel like, well, I deserve like I’ve gotten good things.

00:17:41:08 – 00:18:00:11
Unknown
And so something that’s going to happen, like my mindset for that is, yeah, it’s just like this, this, this mindset of mistrust. But like, why does my heart rest there? Why why am I turning to that? And why instead can I just trust in the Lord as far as, like, yeah, whatever happens is going to happen, but he’ll be with me in a company in the space.

00:18:00:11 – 00:18:04:16
Unknown
And so those are some of his initial thoughts.

00:18:04:18 – 00:18:31:08
Unknown
Yeah. Thanks, bro. Yeah, I think I think this is a question on the show notes, but I think I was moved by it this morning because, we we don’t necessarily have to say it. And it’s a lot of times nonverbal, or implicit meaning it’s so ingrained in us that we often times the way we live, the way we act, what we say, how we pray, it reveals to us a couple things who I think God is and who who am I, right?

00:18:31:08 – 00:18:55:03
Unknown
Like, if we live with this, okay, everything’s going good and then this is going to drop. Or like, I again, it’s that it’s like a skepticism and or it’s like all this is going good. And I’m preparing myself to struggle to suffer that. It’s like too good to be true, right? I feel that deeply because it actually reveals something of, even if subconsciously about what we think about God.

00:18:55:05 – 00:19:16:04
Unknown
And a lot of this stuff can be formed into us. But, but, but it’s an important question. Who who do I actually think God is? And then whatever that truth is, the formation of my heart there, it affects who what I, what I feel about my own life, about my own self, my own dignity, my own self esteem, or my life.

00:19:16:06 – 00:19:42:09
Unknown
Like how my life is, is my life under the providence of God or not? Is he holding everything in his heart, in his hands, and as a perfectly good father, perfectly attentive at every moment? Either that’s true or nothing’s true. Like if God is is who he says he is, or then that throws us into a whole like a disjointed, disconnected, like, craziness.

00:19:42:11 – 00:20:00:20
Unknown
Because if God is not good holding everything, or if that’s not true, then everything lies just a game and you’re like, okay. It’s like, well, okay, if this is good, then it’s like I’m always at a posture defensiveness or I have to be ten steps ahead so I know how to do things and, and like make sure no one gets hurt or, or whatever.

00:20:00:22 – 00:20:22:20
Unknown
So it’s a really good question. And I’m struck that in the context of Saint Francis, that those are the questions. God, Saint Francis asked at the beginning of his conversion. Those are prioritized questions because we got to get the questions right, especially who God is, because that sets the trajectory of our life and the way we live relationships.

00:20:22:22 – 00:20:47:02
Unknown
And if we get that wrong, or if we’re a little confused and we start with the worldly thing of like that, we’re actually all like, all on our own, or that I get to do everything by myself, or I can’t really trust God’s goodness constantly. We got to get that. We got to get that one question right or everything is, is, is kind of disjointed.

00:20:47:03 – 00:21:10:03
Unknown
So I’m just direct. Saint Francis ask those questions. He thought they were important because he doesn’t actually want us to. He didn’t want us to live like orphans or skeptical or thinking that we had to. We had to kind of do it all by ourselves or make it make sense by ourselves. So then like the the rebuttal then is like, but what about all this stuff in the Scripture about like the cross and suffering?

00:21:10:05 – 00:21:32:20
Unknown
I think for the person who’s like struggling with this, this is kind of, so there might be like a human component of like a temperament or disposition towards thinking something bad’s going to happen, but also then it can kind of get fed by the spirit thing. Well, okay, there’s all this talk about suffering in the gospel and I’m not necessarily suffering a ton right now, so I must it must be on its way.

00:21:32:20 – 00:22:08:13
Unknown
So then how do like how do you kind of respond to that? I’ll, I’ll jump in. Yeah. Yeah. So again, what I would say to that is, is it. And it’s not a cop out. If someone was sitting in front of me in spiritual direction, here’s what I’d say. Is, is we don’t we all those things and and maybe this is vulnerable, but my and this is I think this kind of intense but whatever my own spiritual director cautions me constantly about asking, like using question words in prayer.

00:22:08:13 – 00:22:29:05
Unknown
Now he’s making a point. So it’s not it’s okay to ask Jesus questions, but it usually can distract us. Like the how, the what’s the why’s? My spiritual director says, hey, we got to be careful because that can get us in our head and we get we’re limited. We can’t see clearly so, well, why does this happen? Or why am I experiencing consolation now?

00:22:29:05 – 00:22:56:19
Unknown
And what if this happens? Or why this happens? Or. And so that can distract us in prayer and rob us, right. Because it takes away our peace and we get overly we overly think about stuff. And the whole point of prayer is to is, is to create and experience or not create. So to say yes to an experience where we can remain in communion and remain connected to God and receive his care in Providence.

00:22:56:21 – 00:23:13:01
Unknown
So what I would say is we got to be really careful when we’re when we’re afraid because fear is behind that. Well, yeah, I’m experiencing a lot of things right now and it’s a lot of consolation. I’m like, okay, I it’s hard for me to trust because the gospel talks about the cross and giving up everything, denying yourself.

00:23:13:01 – 00:23:18:12
Unknown
And I’m like, okay, how do I do this? To me, that’s overthinking.

00:23:18:14 – 00:23:43:02
Unknown
It’s real. And I want to honor the fear and what we and we we experience. But but the gift of God in relationship is the present moment. Being with the real person who’s caring for us in Jesus. I’m too little and limited to understand everything in the future. I’m actually not promise understanding, but what I know is that you’re here right now, taking care of me and providing for everything in my life.

00:23:43:04 – 00:24:05:05
Unknown
And I’m going to read. I don’t want to miss the gift you’re giving now, so I’m going to receive the consolation and the love and the stability. But Jesus, I mean. And Ignatius says, then make acts of faith, hope, and love, that no matter what comes, I’m going to trust you. Do this because there come a time when maybe I’ll suffer, but I don’t know that.

00:24:05:07 – 00:24:23:01
Unknown
So I’m going to stay with you and make acts of faith, hope, and love for the future and remain present with a person with you right now and receive everything you want to give me. I think that’s what I would tell the director to say, no, no, stay with me here. And we just all we’re all we’re responsible for is the present moment.

00:24:23:03 – 00:24:45:22
Unknown
And let’s make act of faith and hope and love for the future. But that’s all we can do. And surrender that to God and stay present. Yeah, I think that it’s great fun. Where are you going? To jump in for pity okay. You’re muted. Now you go ahead okay. Is they certainly I think what kind of a foundational thing that this reveal certainly is who do we think God is.

00:24:45:22 – 00:25:11:08
Unknown
Right. And you said that initially like okay, these doubts and these questions and these fears like what are these saying about who wouldn’t understand? Can’t be, and right, like I think, we can affirm that there is a way in prayer, where there it can be healthy to share some of our hearts or can share our heart and share questions.

00:25:11:10 – 00:25:28:05
Unknown
Again, Psalm 22. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Right. So we’re not saying we’re not completely negating these, but what it does come down to is, like what? And this is certainly a work in a grace, the Holy Spirit. We can pray for him. Like not everything is a question. Not everything’s up for grabs.

00:25:28:05 – 00:25:47:09
Unknown
Not everything is uncertain. We do actually know who God is. We do know who God is. And we do know that he works for the good in all things, for those who love him. And we know that the cross never has the last word, but the resurrection does. And so what’s going to happen? How it’s going to look when it’s going to happen?

00:25:47:11 – 00:26:09:16
Unknown
None of that. Do we know? And none of that are we, sort of entitled to know or promise to know. And like you said, we’re not promised understanding. And one of the things that, kind of my immediate answer that I’m going to go a little bit deeper in kind of, you know, what you said is, there’s not a ton of I know we like we like to use the prayer of Saint Francis like God.

00:26:09:16 – 00:26:26:12
Unknown
Who are you? Who am I? But if you look at his writings, there’s not actually a ton of questions. It’s not a ton of questions. And I do think we want to stay rooted in who God is. Right? And and I my I think probably my favorite of his his prayers is it’s called prayer. It’s like praise of God, a prayer in praise of God.

00:26:26:14 – 00:26:42:11
Unknown
And this is where he says, like, you are good, all good, supreme, good, Lord God, living and true like so. Who God is is good, all good, supreme good. So this is an anchor. But then what? What? Like this whole prayer is like you are holy. You are great. You are love, you are wisdom. You are humility. You are endurance.

00:26:42:11 – 00:27:13:00
Unknown
You are rest. You are peace. You are joy and gladness. Your beauty. You are a protector. Like like so there’s this there’s there’s this refrain in this prayer of Saint Francis, which I think is so important because, like, he lives very vulnerable before the Lord, but where he has the security is in who the Lord is. Right. And I think this is a beautiful like like even if you look at I think it is Psalm 22, it comes to this sort of statement of faith and hope at the end of it, even though it begins with this question, is like if there can be space to ask the questions, but we can’t.

00:27:13:00 – 00:27:30:19
Unknown
We can’t live there, we can’t remain there. And we do want to make this just journey towards like what has been revealed. Like, what do we know? Like what is our foundation? And I think it is who God is. Use our he is good, all good, supreme good. And if he is good, all good, supreme good. Like loving father, protector, safety.

00:27:30:19 – 00:27:51:09
Unknown
Rest well. You know what? Like we don’t know what’s going to happen, but we know he’s with us. And if he’s with us and we journey through it actually, like we can have confidence it’s going to it’s going to work out. And I do think this is, yeah, I do think this is where we want to find our security.

00:27:51:11 – 00:28:17:21
Unknown
Amen. And all that. Just to continue on with the Saint Francis peace is that prayer, because I was going to reference it, but you did, so. Yay, team. Little note. Thank you. For Solanus fossilize is a scholar of ours. Franciscan. He’s he was, he study Franciscan writing or Saint Francis writings and medieval, manuscripts. But he said this was this prayer in particular.

00:28:17:23 – 00:28:48:13
Unknown
Francis wrote in Thanksgiving for the consolation of the surf and the impression of the stigmata of Christ on his body in Livonia in 1224. Just so this sorry, I couldn’t okay, so this very prayer itself, was born from suffering, right? Like the whole security. Like you are. God, you’re a good your, that your humility, your your peace like that comes from the place of Francis receiving just who God is, especially in suffering.

00:28:48:19 – 00:29:08:18
Unknown
And, you know, the question was first brought up, it’s like, if we’re not suffering, if we’re not in this place and we think the issue is going to drop. Yeah. Like, what does that speak? But but Francis just had this, this awesome and this super grounded and real love of God and knowing who he is. And that was enough.

00:29:08:20 – 00:29:39:18
Unknown
And so for us, like, in the same way to and this once again is we’re out of suffering like for us, even if we’re not quote unquote suffering in comparison to other people. Like, how are we experiencing God in that moment? I think it’s the most important thing where, yeah, maybe like whatever it is that we think we should be experiencing, the Lord knows our hearts and he knows, hey, this is enough for you as far as, like, entering into this space and whether something happens or not is not the most important thing, but like, how are we focused or having that focus?

00:29:39:18 – 00:30:02:18
Unknown
But how are we we settling into a relationship with the Lord in the space that he’s given us to, to be currently, you know, whether we deem it suffering, whether we deem it’s, not suffering. And I think, once again, Francis pointed to the fact that the most important thing that we can do as a as sons of a father who loves us tremendously, is to affirm and attest that he is good, that he’s loving, that he’s patient, use meekness, he’s kind.

00:30:02:20 – 00:30:30:23
Unknown
He is the good, the only good and supreme good. And so, Francis, I think for us should be this model and mirror of despite what’s happening, God is who he is. And as you said from our we know him. We know that this is who he is. And we can press into that that truth in reality, as opposed to looking around God or around us to say, these situations stink or I should I shouldn’t be experiencing these things.

00:30:30:23 – 00:30:53:09
Unknown
And she’s going to drop because ultimately he just wants he just wants our hearts and our attention. And just also to to hold up the fact that, like, it’s natural for us to to think these things. And so just how do we invite the grace and how do we invite the Lord to, to enter that space of, of our own natural desires or our own natural hesitancy, just to be able to to see with him, think with him?

00:30:53:11 – 00:31:14:21
Unknown
And more so just affirm his heart for us in this place. Yeah, bro. That’s awesome. And and I’m really moved because I think the beauty of kind of what we’re saying is there’s this invitation when we when we get stuck in ourselves or the fear or like the questioning is, is to look at him and just keep looking back at him in his heart, like father, like, what’s his heart like for us?

00:31:14:21 – 00:31:33:23
Unknown
And that, that can get you out of a tough place in prayer, that can that can totally transform a tough day. Jesus, show me your heart. Remind me again who I am, what your heart’s like for me and brother. Brothers I’ve told is, as we walk with the young guys and and teach guys how to pray, I always say keep a copy of the praises of God close by.

00:31:33:23 – 00:32:03:15
Unknown
Because if that was your whole prayer life, that’ll get you somewhere, right? Because it anchors us in something else than our fear or our distractions. Like, just pray the praises of God and look at the one you love in the Eucharist, or the or the cross, or an icon, and that praise will get you out of yourself, and you’ll land in a real relationship with Jesus, whose presence and taking care of you, like we know who he is and he comes and gives him gives himself to his constantly.

00:32:03:17 – 00:32:22:10
Unknown
And so I just I just love the praises of God. Is a is a is one of Francis’s one of my favorite prayers. I think it’s it’s one of his just anointed prayers. Know and I think I can I can really transform this moment when we get stuck in the questioning or the fear. I just think it could be super helpful.

00:32:22:12 – 00:32:40:04
Unknown
And even to the the Canticle of Creatures like people, at least I thought. And this is when I went to see I saw that the truth of it. But he composed it at the convent, a son, Damiano, he was there on a mat. There were, I think, mice like, running over him. His eyes were cauterize. He was suffering.

00:32:40:05 – 00:33:06:00
Unknown
He wasn’t in a good place, I’ll put it that way. You know, like physically and probably had just, like, difficulties happening for him emotionally. But he composes this beautiful canticle, you know, of. Yeah. Praising Brother Sun, Sister Moon. And I think sometimes we can, we can sink or fall into the trap of like, my prayer is going to be good only if the externals are good around me, you know, or like when I feel good, I pray good.

00:33:06:02 – 00:33:33:01
Unknown
But with Francis, I think shows us is even in places of difficulty and suffering, we can just approach the Lord as we are and, and still praise him for his goodness. Even though we may not feel good, we can still praise him for his kindness and his love. Because that’s true. And sometimes, and oftentimes, actually, that brings us out of the place of like feeling how we feel about ourselves, because then we start thinking with the Lord and and recognizing just his goodness.

00:33:33:01 – 00:33:51:02
Unknown
And it’s almost like, like sometimes what helps, too, is just having like, this, like just doing like a litany of Thanksgiving type of thing where we just recognize how the Lord has blessed us in certain spaces of our lives. And so, I just hold it up to just in the sense of despite where we are, we know how the Lord is, despite how we feel.

00:33:51:02 – 00:34:08:07
Unknown
We know how the Lord is, whether it’s good or bad. And and we can we can focus on him. And Francis really shows us that. Yeah, it could be an immense suffering. It can be an immense joy. But the song should still sound the same in the sense of like, he’s good, he’s loving, he’s kind, he’s he’s these things.

00:34:08:07 – 00:34:29:23
Unknown
Because that doesn’t change. Maybe like the tempo of the song or like the, the words, the songs sound different but or different, but like, the whole, like movement is still the same. It’s towards him. It’s it’s he’s good. And so just to hold it up and off that for, for us to, to chew on, to ponder on those are two I felt that bro I felt

00:34:30:01 – 00:34:39:10
Unknown
And I appreciate that. We’re kind of seemingly on the same page with the praises of God. And, and I do think this is even if

00:34:39:12 – 00:35:06:02
Unknown
Because I understand the, the doubt, the insecurity, the fear. It’s like a real thing. So we’re not and we should have a lot of tenderness there for, for sure. Yeah. So I think the, But I do think that, like, even if you’re not all, like, completely there yet as, like an act of faith and hope and asking for the grace to get there, I do like I appreciate that you invite the guys, like, keep this prayer close prayer in praise of God.

00:35:06:04 – 00:35:26:00
Unknown
And this can be something that can be like, almost something that like you cling to, you know, like like one of those types of prayers, like when you are really struggling and kind of doubting and uncertain before the future or even the present, just kind of the state cling to and stay rooted in, in who God is.

00:35:26:03 – 00:35:41:05
Unknown
And it is. It’s one of my favorite prayers. It’s available in a lot of places online. This this is kind of vulnerable. But I there’s one line from that prayer that is good, like anchors me and reminds me. So I just I just kind of go back to that line all the time because it reminds me who Jesus is.

00:35:41:07 – 00:35:49:16
Unknown
So even. Yeah. Just beautiful. You can find even one line that moves you and you’re like, whoa, I can I can come back, you know?

00:35:49:18 – 00:36:10:04
Unknown
And just to say, like it’s it’s also very biblical too, in the sense of like David in the Psalms, like whenever he was in some sort of like trial or difficulty, he would thank the Lord for delivering him from that, that trial difficulty before it actually happened, because, like, he knows the Lord is his strength and like, you know, whatever the Lord is my good Shepherd, and nothing I shall fear.

00:36:10:06 – 00:36:26:18
Unknown
And so just say that to where? Yeah, we’re also doing something that is actually good. And as far as, like, keeping who the Lord is before us and, and yeah, it is helpful, I think, when we have some sort of external thing that reminds us of who he is, it’s almost like keeping a picture of a loved one.

00:36:26:18 – 00:36:43:01
Unknown
Right? You know, like a a good moment and you’re just like, okay, cool. Like that’s who that person is. I remember that moment. And so same thing too, with this prayer, as far as the praises of God or some sort of scripture just to remind you of who God is to you. Amen. Great, I love it. Thanks, guys.

00:36:43:03 – 00:37:08:21
Unknown
Thank you. We’ll pray. Father, son and Holy Spirit. Amen. Oh, thank you, Jesus, for revealing to us the father. Thank you for bringing us into relationship with the father. Thank you for the gift of your Holy Spirit. We pray, Lord, that we may be rooted, in you, in who you are, and may find our confidence and peace in that Lord, because you are good, all good, supreme good.

00:37:08:23 – 00:37:21:04
Unknown
Lord God, living and true. May we experience this more and more and deeper and deeper. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. Oh, son, Holy Spirit. Amen. I was laughing because that’s the life.

00:37:21:06 – 00:37:35:00
Unknown
The. Your good. All good. Supreme good. Yeah. That’s the my my prayer for it. As I go through the day that Jesus reminds me Jesus is good. That’s. I mean, that’s the part for me. Yeah, that made me think of it too. So.

00:37:35:02 – 00:37:59:08
Unknown
Great. Anything you got? You got some cards there, bro. You got your. Are you getting ready for shout out? What’s going on? I, sister one second get shout outs. Just got it and stuff. So for real, that’s what I googled. I mean, yeah, it as it’s a travelator travelator moving sidewalk or walk a later.

00:38:46:15 – 00:38:58:23
Unknown
So I thought I made it up apparently, which I like. Travelator. Yeah. I said, you know, the basketball court. All right. By all right, y’all.

Key Takeaways

  • One friar describes a person who expects something bad because life has been good, “bracing for the shoe to drop,” and he names it as a real struggle to trust God.
  • Another friar says the way we live and pray shows what we think about God, so the key question is who God is.
  • A friar says “We do know who God is,” and that “the cross never has the last word, but the resurrection does.”
  • The friars say we are “not promised understanding” of what will happen or when, and encourage trust in God’s care and presence.
  • Questions can have a place in prayer, like “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”, but a friar says “We can’t live there” and encourages us to come back to who God is.
  • One friar suggests staying in the present moment and making acts of faith, hope and love for the future, trusting God whatever comes.
  • The friars recommend the Praises of God as a prayer to keep close, and they say Francis praised God’s goodness even in suffering: “the song should still sound the same.”

What This Means for Prayer and Daily Life

If you catch yourself waiting for the other shoe to drop, start by naming it honestly. The friars do not brush the fear aside. One says we should have “a lot of tenderness” for it. Bring it to the Lord the way you would bring any worry to a friend.

Then ask the question the friars keep returning to: who do I think God is? Try a short prayer one friar suggests: “Jesus, show me your heart.” Ask Him to remind you who you are to Him. A good Father who is attentive to you at every moment is a very different picture from a God who is waiting to catch you off guard.

Choose a line to carry. One friar says he tells young men to keep a copy of the Praises of God close by, and another says he returns to a single line of it all the time. “Good, all good, supreme good” is a place to start. You can also try a short litany of thanksgiving, naming how the Lord has blessed you.

When your mind jumps to tomorrow, bring it back to today. One friar says he is too limited to understand the future, so he receives what the Lord is giving now and makes acts of faith, hope and love for whatever comes. The friars do not promise that nothing hard will ever happen. They say we are not promised understanding of what will happen, but are called to trust in God’s care and presence. Ask for the grace to take the next faithful step He puts in front of you today.

This week, ask yourself: When life is good, do I receive it as a gift from a good Father or as a warning? And which line of prayer could I come back to when the fear gets loud?

FAQ Section: Trusting God with Tomorrow

It is the habit of expecting something bad to happen because things have been going well. In the episode, one friar describes someone who has had good days and good prayer but reads that as a sign that tragedy is coming. He says that kind of bracing shows up in our faith when we find it hard to trust that God is good.

The friars do not say so. One friar says the thought reveals something about what we think of God, and another says we do not know and are not promised understanding of what will happen or when. The Church teaches that a sound Christian attitude toward the future is to put ourselves confidently into the hands of Providence. Jesus teaches us not to be consumed by anxious concern for tomorrow, but to trust our heavenly Father’s providence.

One friar says it can be healthy to share our hearts and our questions with God, pointing to the psalm that begins “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Another friar says his spiritual director cautions him that a stream of “how,” “what” and “why” can pull us into our heads and rob our peace. The friars agree we should not stay in the questions and should come back to who God is.

It is a prayer attributed to Saint Francis in which he praises God with a long list of names, including “good, all good, supreme good.” One friar describes the prayer as connected with Francis’s experience of suffering. The friars suggest keeping it close and returning to one line that moves you.

In the episode, one friar, drawing on Saint Ignatius, says we can make acts of faith, hope and love for the future, telling Jesus that no matter what comes we will trust Him. In Catholic teaching, faith, hope and charity are the theological virtues. They are gifts God gives us so we can act as His children.

The friars say yes. One friar says Francis shows that even in difficulty and suffering, “we can just approach the Lord as we are” and still praise Him for His goodness. He describes the trap of thinking prayer is good only when the externals are good, and he says the song “should still sound the same” whatever the tempo.
