Episode Summary
What if peace isn’t something you have to create on your own?
In this episode, the friars reflect on the gift of “borrowing” from Jesus. His peace, His confidence, His mercy, His steadiness, especially when our own hearts feel overwhelmed, anxious, or shaken. Like a child borrowing calm from a loving parent, we’re invited to bring our storms to the One who is never overcome by them.
They explore how Jesus offers us His very life: in prayer, in the Eucharist, and in the quiet steadiness of His presence. When we feel disregulated, afraid, ashamed, or unable to hold everything together, we don’t have to manufacture peace by ourselves. We can receive His.
This conversation is an invitation to return to Jesus in the boat, Jesus in the Eucharist, Jesus who gives His body and His peace to us so that what we receive from Him can become what we offer to others. Join us as we learn to borrow peace from Jesus, and become a place of calm, mercy, and safety for others.

[00:08:35 –> 00:08:37] I think there’s more to, anyway.
[00:08:37 –> 00:08:38] And then I’m gonna, like,

[00:09:01 –> 00:09:03] that’s your responsibility.
[00:09:03 –> 00:09:04] That’s who I’d want to be.
[00:09:06 –> 00:09:07] Unfortunately, I’m just
[00:09:09 –> 00:09:10] Jimmy Garoppolo.
[00:09:11 –> 00:09:12] You are not Jimmy. – I mean that’s
[00:09:12 –> 00:09:13] what people say a lot.
[00:09:13 –> 00:09:15] People say- – In what way,
[00:09:15 –> 00:09:16] that you’re Jimmy Garoppolo?
[00:09:16 –> 00:09:18] When they see me around, they’re, like,
[00:09:18 –> 00:09:20] “Wait, you look like somebody.”
[00:09:20 –> 00:09:21] Like, “Have I seen you before?”
[00:09:21 –> 00:09:24] And sometimes I’m like, “I don’t know.
[00:09:24 –> 00:09:25] I mean, I guess maybe, like”-
[00:09:25 –> 00:09:28] Not knowing what- – YouTube, no.
[00:09:28 –> 00:09:31] No, like, “No, no, football. 49ers.”
[00:09:33 –> 00:09:34] And then it’s, like, “Oh, Jimmy G.”
[00:09:34 –> 00:09:35] Yeah. I’m like, “Yeah, I know.
[00:09:35 –> 00:09:37] I get that a lot.” It’s, like, annoying.
[00:09:37 –> 00:09:38] Not to, anyway,
[00:09:38 –> 00:09:41] just to say, you would look more like Kyle Juszczyk
[00:09:41 –> 00:09:42] as opposed to- – Dude.
[00:09:42 –> 00:09:44] I don’t even know what he looks like.
[00:09:44 –> 00:09:45] I’ll take it.
[00:09:45 –> 00:09:46] You guys, the whole,
[00:09:46 –> 00:09:47] you have no idea what I’m talking about.
[00:09:47 –> 00:09:50] And Jimmy G is famously known
[00:09:50 –> 00:09:52] for being exceedingly handsome.
[00:09:55 –> 00:09:55] That’s the joke.
[00:09:55 –> 00:09:57] Father Innocent just removed
[00:09:57 –> 00:09:59] his headphones. – Yeah, he’s done.
[00:09:59 –> 00:10:00] He’s done
[00:10:00 –> 00:10:01] with this conversation. – I just,
[00:10:01 –> 00:10:04] I can hear you. I just changed the audio.
[00:10:06 –> 00:10:07] The other thing about Nick Bosa
[00:10:07 –> 00:10:09] is he gets hurt a lot,
[00:10:09 –> 00:10:10] or he’s hurt,
[00:10:10 –> 00:10:12] so that’s also
[00:10:12 –> 00:10:13] a Father Innocent comp. – Didn’t he have, like,
[00:10:13 –> 00:10:15] a back thing too?
[00:10:15 –> 00:10:16] No. – Probably.
[00:10:16 –> 00:10:17] He gets hurt a lot. – Yeah.
[00:10:19 –> 00:10:20] Guys. – He’s also intense
[00:10:20 –> 00:10:23] but fragile. (hosts laughs)
[00:10:23 –> 00:10:24] It’s not your fault.
[00:10:24 –> 00:10:25] But he’s a game changer. – Are those weird
[00:10:25 –> 00:10:26] to go together?
[00:10:26 –> 00:10:28] I feel fragile, actually,
[00:10:28 –> 00:10:30] in all ways right now.
[00:10:30 –> 00:10:31] Intense but fragile.
[00:10:33 –> 00:10:34] All right.
[00:10:34 –> 00:10:35] So thank you,
[00:10:36 –> 00:10:37] everyone,
[00:10:37 –> 00:10:38] for allowing me- – It was a fun game.
[00:10:38 –> 00:10:40] Thank you. – to have that conversation.
[00:10:40 –> 00:10:42] And I would love to keep doing that
[00:10:42 –> 00:10:44] with other positions and basketball.
[00:10:44 –> 00:10:44] Anyway.
[00:10:44 –> 00:10:47] But here we are, here we are,
[00:10:47 –> 00:10:48] talking about,
[00:10:50 –> 00:10:51] I would be an offensive coordinator.
[00:10:51 –> 00:10:52] I wouldn’t even be a player.
[00:10:52 –> 00:10:53] Okay, anyway.
[00:10:56 –> 00:11:00] This is a theme that came up in a previous episode,
[00:11:00 –> 00:11:04] that Father Angelus mentioned this idea about,
[00:11:04 –> 00:11:06] like, borrowing from another
[00:11:07 –> 00:11:08] and borrowing from the Lord.
[00:11:08 –> 00:11:10] And it was when we were talking about the prodigal son
[00:11:10 –> 00:11:12] and, I think the older son,
[00:11:12 –> 00:11:14] and it was, like, on forgiveness.
[00:11:14 –> 00:11:16] And some of the foundation
[00:11:16 –> 00:11:18] that you were laying in that conversation,
[00:11:18 –> 00:11:19] Father Angelus was
[00:11:23 –> 00:11:24] just, like, reminding us that, like,
[00:11:24 –> 00:11:27] you don’t, like, forgive by yourself,
[00:11:27 –> 00:11:29] and you don’t have to forgive by yourself.
[00:11:29 –> 00:11:30] Like, you don’t, like,
[00:11:32 –> 00:11:33] it’s, like, grace.
[00:11:33 –> 00:11:36] And it was in this context that you introduced
[00:11:36 –> 00:11:39] this, like, idea of, like, what you don’t have,
[00:11:39 –> 00:11:40] like, you borrow,
[00:11:40 –> 00:11:41] and, like, borrowing from the Lord,
[00:11:41 –> 00:11:42] and allowing
[00:11:43 –> 00:11:47] His abundance, if you will, to flow into and provide
[00:11:47 –> 00:11:49] for your poverty.
[00:11:49 –> 00:11:50] And this is part of, like,
[00:11:51 –> 00:11:53] the movement of grace.
[00:11:53 –> 00:11:55] And I just thought, like,
[00:11:55 –> 00:11:57] I think it’s, like, a really beautiful image,
[00:11:57 –> 00:11:59] and in so many different ways,
[00:11:59 –> 00:12:00] this idea of, like, borrowing,
[00:12:00 –> 00:12:02] of, like, not having but having access to another
[00:12:02 –> 00:12:04] who has an abundance to share,
[00:12:04 –> 00:12:07] like borrowing faith, borrowing mercy, borrowing hope,
[00:12:07 –> 00:12:10] but also, like, how we can lend mercy, lend faith,
[00:12:10 –> 00:12:13] lend hope, like, to provide for someone else’s lack.
[00:12:16 –> 00:12:18] Can you just, like,
[00:12:18 –> 00:12:20] expound upon that a little bit,
[00:12:20 –> 00:12:21] Father Angelus?
[00:12:21 –> 00:12:23] Yeah.
[00:12:23 –> 00:12:27] I think this conversation was on the list for, like,
[00:12:27 –> 00:12:28] like, eight episodes,
[00:12:28 –> 00:12:29] but then I kept getting kicked off,
[00:12:29 –> 00:12:31] so glad we can finally have it a little bit.
[00:12:33 –> 00:12:35] One of the things in just thinking about that today
[00:12:35 –> 00:12:36] in preparation for this,
[00:12:37 –> 00:12:41] the initial concept I think comes from,
[00:12:41 –> 00:12:42] maybe I’ll give an image.
[00:12:42 –> 00:12:45] The image is, is think of my sister,
[00:12:45 –> 00:12:46] I don’t know if she listens to anymore,
[00:12:46 –> 00:12:48] but just think of my sister who
[00:12:49 –> 00:12:52] has her five-year-old come up to her
[00:12:52 –> 00:12:54] in a really difficult space,
[00:12:54 –> 00:12:57] we would say, in the nervous system, dysregulated,
[00:12:57 –> 00:13:00] upset, crying, hurt.
[00:13:00 –> 00:13:04] And if what my sister can offer the five-year-old,
[00:13:04 –> 00:13:07] the five-year-old boy is her calm and her peace
[00:13:07 –> 00:13:09] and her ability to be with him
[00:13:09 –> 00:13:11] in the midst of his own difficulty.
[00:13:11 –> 00:13:14] Now, the challenge is, is if my sister’s struggling,
[00:13:14 –> 00:13:16] then this little boy who’s triggered and upset
[00:13:16 –> 00:13:19] and disconnected and raging,
[00:13:19 –> 00:13:24] if that triggers my sister to be dysregulated, raging,
[00:13:25 –> 00:13:28] angry, upset, then you have two dysregulated people
[00:13:28 –> 00:13:29] hanging out.
[00:13:29 –> 00:13:33] And that’s not necessarily ideal. (chuckles)
[00:13:33 –> 00:13:36] But the reality is, is if my sister, as the mom,
[00:13:36 –> 00:13:38] as the one who’s trying to mature, trying to grow,
[00:13:38 –> 00:13:41] trying to be virtuous, doing her own work to consider,
[00:13:41 –> 00:13:42] “Hey, what triggers me?
[00:13:42 –> 00:13:44] When people get upset, how do I show up?”
[00:13:44 –> 00:13:45] And if she’s doing her own work,
[00:13:45 –> 00:13:47] and God bless my sister, I know she is,
[00:13:47 –> 00:13:49] then she can
[00:13:50 –> 00:13:53] show up in life, particularly in these situations
[00:13:54 –> 00:13:55] where you have a lot of dysregulated kids,
[00:13:55 –> 00:13:58] ’cause that’s what kids are, mostly dysregulated,
[00:13:58 –> 00:14:00] she can offer something to them, which is,
[00:14:00 –> 00:14:02] I don’t have to figure it out right now.
[00:14:02 –> 00:14:04] I don’t have to give perfect advice,
[00:14:04 –> 00:14:05] and I don’t have to make everything better,
[00:14:05 –> 00:14:07] but I will offer you my calm body,
[00:14:08 –> 00:14:12] and I will offer you a presence that allows you to see me
[00:14:12 –> 00:14:14] and experience me and settle down.
[00:14:15 –> 00:14:17] But if everybody’s getting triggered,
[00:14:17 –> 00:14:19] then no one really settles down,
[00:14:19 –> 00:14:20] which I just think is interesting.
[00:14:20 –> 00:14:23] So the five-year-old borrows my sister’s peace
[00:14:23 –> 00:14:25] or borrows my sister’s calm,
[00:14:25 –> 00:14:29] borrows my sister’s breathing that’s slow,
[00:14:29 –> 00:14:31] borrows the voice that’s nurturing
[00:14:32 –> 00:14:34] and has the experience of, like,
[00:14:34 –> 00:14:35] “Well, I’m feeling this,
[00:14:35 –> 00:14:37] but mom is actually offering me something
[00:14:37 –> 00:14:39] where she’s holding me, she’s holding,
[00:14:39 –> 00:14:41] she’s soothing me,
[00:14:41 –> 00:14:43] and then she calms me down,
[00:14:43 –> 00:14:45] and then I can, like, work out, like, okay, what happened?
[00:14:45 –> 00:14:46] Why are you feeling this way?”
[00:14:48 –> 00:14:48] And so I like that.
[00:14:48 –> 00:14:51] I like that as an image to start off, like,
[00:14:51 –> 00:14:53] oh, yeah, this is what parents do all the time.
[00:14:53 –> 00:14:55] They lend their kids stuff,
[00:14:55 –> 00:14:57] especially when the kid’s younger
[00:14:57 –> 00:14:58] and they can’t quite make sense
[00:14:58 –> 00:15:00] of what I’m supposed to do here, what I’m supposed to feel.
[00:15:00 –> 00:15:02] All they know is this raw feeling and this raw emotion
[00:15:02 –> 00:15:05] that hasn’t necessarily been ordered yet,
[00:15:05 –> 00:15:07] and I bring it to someone.
[00:15:07 –> 00:15:10] And mom, because of her ability to stay calm,
[00:15:10 –> 00:15:14] connected and regulated, offers me something different
[00:15:14 –> 00:15:15] rather than,
[00:15:15 –> 00:15:16] and again, we all have experiences where, like,
[00:15:16 –> 00:15:19] there’s people that are having the intense discussions,
[00:15:19 –> 00:15:19] and everybody’s dysregulated,
[00:15:19 –> 00:15:22] and you, like, wonder why we don’t get anywhere.
[00:15:22 –> 00:15:25] Well, ’cause there’s no one offering stillness
[00:15:25 –> 00:15:27] or understanding or peace
[00:15:28 –> 00:15:30] or something that can calm things down.
[00:15:30 –> 00:15:33] And, Father, did you have something to say?
[00:15:33 –> 00:15:34] Anybody? – Yeah, so, like, regulated,
[00:15:34 –> 00:15:35] dysregulated, regulate,
[00:15:35 –> 00:15:37] like, dysregulated would be like
[00:15:37 –> 00:15:38] there’s, like, an interior storm,
[00:15:38 –> 00:15:41] regulated would be like calm seas.
[00:15:41 –> 00:15:42] Would that be
[00:15:42 –> 00:15:43] the language- – Yeah.
[00:15:43 –> 00:15:44] what it means? – And
[00:15:44 –> 00:15:46] some of the people are familiar with, like,
[00:15:47 –> 00:15:50] when something triggers me, I go in fight or flight.
[00:15:50 –> 00:15:52] So I wanna run away, I wanna get upset, I wanna, like,
[00:15:52 –> 00:15:54] or I shut down, like.
[00:15:54 –> 00:15:55] I feel like sometimes,
[00:15:55 –> 00:15:57] I’ve realized recently in my own life,
[00:15:57 –> 00:15:59] I actually shut down more than I think.
[00:15:59 –> 00:16:01] Sometimes I feel like I run away when things happen,
[00:16:01 –> 00:16:04] but I’m actually, I shut off inside so maybe I shut down.
[00:16:04 –> 00:16:08] And so people have ways they deal with intense things.
[00:16:08 –> 00:16:11] And, generally, it’s, I wanna run, I wanna fight
[00:16:11 –> 00:16:13] or I wanna back away and totally shut off.
[00:16:13 –> 00:16:16] And so, again, your storm, like, the storm’s brewing,
[00:16:16 –> 00:16:17] and so I’m upset,
[00:16:18 –> 00:16:20] or it’s like there’s a storm brewing,
[00:16:20 –> 00:16:23] and I, like, just wanna back away and shut down.
[00:16:23 –> 00:16:27] And so can I borrow that? Can I borrow someone else’s peace?
[00:16:27 –> 00:16:31] Can I borrow someone else’s confidence in the Lord?
[00:16:31 –> 00:16:32] Can I borrow someone else’s calmness
[00:16:32 –> 00:16:34] in the midst of maybe emotional reality
[00:16:34 –> 00:16:36] where I’m feeling something?
[00:16:37 –> 00:16:40] And it’s interesting because that challenges me personally
[00:16:40 –> 00:16:42] because it’s, like, how do I show up somewhere,
[00:16:42 –> 00:16:44] especially when someone is struggling
[00:16:44 –> 00:16:46] or a postulant who needs something,
[00:16:46 –> 00:16:48] or one of the neighbors who needs something?
[00:16:48 –> 00:16:50] Like, am I showing up to offer them something
[00:16:51 –> 00:16:52] more than just advice?
[00:16:52 –> 00:16:53] ‘Cause they feel it.
[00:16:53 –> 00:16:55] If you’re calm, people feel it.
[00:16:56 –> 00:16:58] People have an experience of, like,
[00:16:58 –> 00:17:01] “Okay, Father can hold this with me because he is connected,
[00:17:01 –> 00:17:04] and he’s able to offer me something in the midst of me
[00:17:06 –> 00:17:09] maybe going crazy or being anxious or being afraid
[00:17:09 –> 00:17:11] or me being so totally upset.”
[00:17:12 –> 00:17:13] Yeah, that’s just,
[00:17:13 –> 00:17:14] I think that’s
[00:17:16 –> 00:17:18] where I would’ve
[00:17:18 –> 00:17:19] initially got that concept,
[00:17:19 –> 00:17:22] but it’s beautiful as we look at the life of Jesus,
[00:17:22 –> 00:17:26] and it’s beautiful as we consider what Jesus offer us
[00:17:26 –> 00:17:28] is, like, He offers us
[00:17:28 –> 00:17:31] the ability to be with us in the midst of our storm.
[00:17:31 –> 00:17:34] He offers us, like, a calm body, a calm heart,
[00:17:34 –> 00:17:35] an open heart.
[00:17:36 –> 00:17:38] Yes, advice,
[00:17:38 –> 00:17:41] yes, ways to help us feel better,
[00:17:41 –> 00:17:44] but I think what He offers us in His presence,
[00:17:44 –> 00:17:46] maybe, like, when we think about the Eucharist
[00:17:46 –> 00:17:48] or we think about the gift of prayer,
[00:17:48 –> 00:17:50] like, what He offers us there in the midst of that
[00:17:51 –> 00:17:53] can be, I think, pretty profound and significant
[00:17:53 –> 00:17:55] if we’re aware of what we need.
[00:17:56 –> 00:17:59] And I think the thing that I would just affirm there
[00:18:00 –> 00:18:03] is the profound reality of what Jesus offers us.
[00:18:03 –> 00:18:05] And because, again, this is, like,
[00:18:06 –> 00:18:09] this is intertwined in how we’re made, right?
[00:18:09 –> 00:18:11] Like, I loved how you used,
[00:18:11 –> 00:18:13] use examples of children.
[00:18:13 –> 00:18:15] Like, they have no capacity.
[00:18:15 –> 00:18:18] They’re so needy. We need someone else’s presence.
[00:18:18 –> 00:18:21] I just love, that’s, like, the starting place.
[00:18:22 –> 00:18:23] But it’s interesting,
[00:18:23 –> 00:18:25] and, again, this won’t be a long comment, it’s just simple
[00:18:25 –> 00:18:29] because, Father Angelus, like, the catechism even says that,
[00:18:29 –> 00:18:33] like, we are even borrowers of Jesus’s prayer.
[00:18:33 –> 00:18:36] We don’t even have, our prayer life is not our own.
[00:18:36 –> 00:18:37] It says there’s one way of prayer,
[00:18:37 –> 00:18:38] and that’s Jesus Christ.
[00:18:38 –> 00:18:41] It’s His relationship with the Father
[00:18:41 –> 00:18:42] that we’re invited into.
[00:18:42 –> 00:18:44] And so we borrow even prayer.
[00:18:47 –> 00:18:49] Prayer’s not a thing that’s mine.
[00:18:49 –> 00:18:53] It’s I borrow because of my identity in Jesus
[00:18:53 –> 00:18:56] to be, like, a son or a daughter in Him.
[00:18:56 –> 00:18:59] It means I borrow everything that He is.
[00:18:59 –> 00:19:02] So my identity is in His identity.
[00:19:02 –> 00:19:07] My prayer, my union, my communion is in His communion.
[00:19:07 –> 00:19:09] He says, like, “Okay, like, let me give you
[00:19:09 –> 00:19:10] a share in my life.”
[00:19:10 –> 00:19:13] Like, today’s gospel in John, it’s amazing, like.
[00:19:13 –> 00:19:16] “As the Father loves me, so I love you.”
[00:19:16 –> 00:19:17] Like, “Remain in my love,”
[00:19:17 –> 00:19:20] and if we remain, then we borrow.
[00:19:20 –> 00:19:23] We get to live His very prayer life, right?
[00:19:23 –> 00:19:26] And I told the guys, in religious life, it’s not,
[00:19:26 –> 00:19:29] it’s not even our own chastity, poverty and obedience.
[00:19:29 –> 00:19:30] Vita Cotacranta says,
[00:19:30 –> 00:19:34] “Vita Consecrata”, the document on the church,
[00:19:34 –> 00:19:35] gives us on religious life.
[00:19:35 –> 00:19:38] It says that we actually share and borrow,
[00:19:38 –> 00:19:40] they don’t use that word but I am,
[00:19:40 –> 00:19:43] we borrow Jesus’s own chastity, poverty and obedience
[00:19:43 –> 00:19:45] before the Father.
[00:19:45 –> 00:19:48] And so I just love that.
[00:19:48 –> 00:19:49] We don’t even have,
[00:19:50 –> 00:19:53] like, the church envisions that this is what we do.
[00:19:53 –> 00:19:56] We borrow the very life of Jesus and His grace
[00:19:56 –> 00:19:57] through live in relationship.
[00:19:57 –> 00:19:59] And so that’s just such good news.
[00:19:59 –> 00:20:02] We don’t have to figure out how to do this by ourselves
[00:20:02 –> 00:20:05] or figure out, like, what I have to,
[00:20:06 –> 00:20:08] what I have to grasp at to make this all work.
[00:20:08 –> 00:20:10] And if I can live in relationship with Jesus
[00:20:10 –> 00:20:12] and borrow His very life,
[00:20:12 –> 00:20:15] then that’s what I can give to other people.
[00:20:15 –> 00:20:19] That’s what they can borrow from me, is the stability.
[00:20:19 –> 00:20:22] Like Jesus says, “My peace,” like,
[00:20:22 –> 00:20:23] “My peace I give you.
[00:20:23 –> 00:20:25] Not as the world gives, do I give it to you.”
[00:20:25 –> 00:20:27] And so when we live in the peace of Jesus,
[00:20:27 –> 00:20:29] that’s the peace we can give.
[00:20:29 –> 00:20:31] And that’s, like, the Christian life or the mystical life.
[00:20:31 –> 00:20:34] That’s just how it flows and works.
[00:20:35 –> 00:20:36] Yeah, I’m just grateful for this conversation
[00:20:36 –> 00:20:40] ’cause, yeah, I think I first heard this on
[00:20:41 –> 00:20:42] a different podcast.
[00:20:42 –> 00:20:44] I can’t think of the name right now.
[00:20:44 –> 00:20:45] But it’s just a,
[00:20:45 –> 00:20:46] it’s just a real- – It’s probably
[00:20:46 –> 00:20:48] Gods planning, bro. – No, it wasn’t that one.
[00:20:48 –> 00:20:49] It was the
[00:20:49 –> 00:20:51] Bob shoots and Jacob- – Restore The Glory.
[00:20:51 –> 00:20:52] Yeah. – Oh, sure.
[00:20:52 –> 00:20:53] Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. – Restore The Glory.
[00:20:53 –> 00:20:54] Shout out to them.
[00:20:54 –> 00:20:55] They’re not listening,
[00:20:55 –> 00:20:56] but anyway.
[00:20:57 –> 00:20:58] Just that, yeah,
[00:20:58 –> 00:21:01] just borrowing from God in particular, these things.
[00:21:01 –> 00:21:03] And, yeah, specifically with the parent,
[00:21:03 –> 00:21:04] as you mentioned, Father Angelus.
[00:21:04 –> 00:21:06] And there is a beautiful way in which,
[00:21:06 –> 00:21:08] our spiritual life, this can happen.
[00:21:08 –> 00:21:09] But I think also too,
[00:21:09 –> 00:21:12] like, y’all just went through, like, the spiritual life,
[00:21:12 –> 00:21:14] and we’re gonna talk about just, like, mercy and hope
[00:21:14 –> 00:21:16] and all these different things,
[00:21:16 –> 00:21:19] but, like, I think also too for, like, our identity
[00:21:19 –> 00:21:23] or just, like, who we are, just resting on that place
[00:21:23 –> 00:21:25] of sometimes
[00:21:25 –> 00:21:27] I don’t feel,
[00:21:28 –> 00:21:29] yeah, like, I feel like my identity is being attacked,
[00:21:29 –> 00:21:31] or I feel like there’s something that is,
[00:21:31 –> 00:21:33] as you said, Father Angelus, like, dysregulating.
[00:21:33 –> 00:21:35] And so can I tap into the piece of Christ?
[00:21:35 –> 00:21:37] Can I, like, in scripture, as I’m reading it,
[00:21:37 –> 00:21:39] and I see Jesus is calm even though there’s accusers,
[00:21:39 –> 00:21:42] and they wanna throw Him off the brow of hill,
[00:21:42 –> 00:21:44] but He somehow, like, calmly moves through that.
[00:21:44 –> 00:21:46] Like, I feel that meaning I feel attacked
[00:21:46 –> 00:21:48] or I feel, like, in this vulnerable state,
[00:21:48 –> 00:21:49] but Jesus has this peace.
[00:21:49 –> 00:21:51] And, Jesus, can You gimme the peace right now that I desire,
[00:21:51 –> 00:21:55] or Jesus, can, like, You have this confidence of,
[00:21:55 –> 00:21:57] like, everything I hear from the Father, I give to you,
[00:21:57 –> 00:22:00] and just, Jesus, I can’t hear the voice of the Father.
[00:22:00 –> 00:22:00] Can You help me?
[00:22:00 –> 00:22:03] And so, yeah, so pleading and asking Jesus, like,
[00:22:03 –> 00:22:04] just to give you those things
[00:22:04 –> 00:22:05] because, like, in the act of borrowing,
[00:22:05 –> 00:22:07] somebody has to freely give it to you.
[00:22:07 –> 00:22:10] And Jesus obviously freely gives us everything,
[00:22:10 –> 00:22:10] even including Himself
[00:22:10 –> 00:22:12] and His body, blood, soul, and divinity.
[00:22:12 –> 00:22:15] But it is something where, I think,
[00:22:15 –> 00:22:17] yeah, this is a huge aspect of
[00:22:17 –> 00:22:18] obviously our psychological life
[00:22:18 –> 00:22:20] that we do without thinking about,
[00:22:20 –> 00:22:22] but how awesome would that be
[00:22:22 –> 00:22:24] if this is a part of our spiritual life,
[00:22:24 –> 00:22:25] where this is, like, second nature for us,
[00:22:25 –> 00:22:27] where, gosh, like,
[00:22:27 –> 00:22:28] I remember this experience of being anxious,
[00:22:28 –> 00:22:31] and then, huh, like, what was Jesus’ experience
[00:22:31 –> 00:22:32] of being anxious,
[00:22:32 –> 00:22:34] or our ladies, you know, moved in this place
[00:22:34 –> 00:22:36] or even, like, a favorite saint or somebody that we have
[00:22:36 –> 00:22:39] that is not just a distant memory to us,
[00:22:39 –> 00:22:41] or, like, this person who’s not involved in the situation,
[00:22:41 –> 00:22:43] but actually a friend who’s walking with us
[00:22:43 –> 00:22:45] that we can, like, lean back and say,
[00:22:45 –> 00:22:46] “Oh, yes”?
[00:22:46 –> 00:22:47] Like, my Father,
[00:22:47 –> 00:22:48] like, Jesus is never shaken by these things,
[00:22:48 –> 00:22:50] and so, Jesus, I’m shaken.
[00:22:50 –> 00:22:53] Can You help me just remain strong and faithful here?
[00:22:54 –> 00:22:55] And I think that’s deeper than just,
[00:22:55 –> 00:22:56] like, praying it away,
[00:22:56 –> 00:22:59] but, like, acknowledging, like, this is difficult for me,
[00:22:59 –> 00:23:00] or this, like, emotional space,
[00:23:00 –> 00:23:01] I don’t have,
[00:23:03 –> 00:23:06] like, the capability to fix this on my own,
[00:23:06 –> 00:23:08] and I need Your help here.
[00:23:08 –> 00:23:09] I think this is a beautiful way
[00:23:09 –> 00:23:11] in which we can invite the Lord to this space,
[00:23:11 –> 00:23:13] but also just lean on Him and lovingly borrow
[00:23:13 –> 00:23:17] and take what He gives us in His relationship.
[00:23:17 –> 00:23:19] Just a quick, sorry to add, I just wanna add something
[00:23:19 –> 00:23:20] ’cause I think that’s awesome.
[00:23:20 –> 00:23:20] Like,
[00:23:21 –> 00:23:23] we’ve all probably had the experience,
[00:23:23 –> 00:23:25] but we’ve always all probably also have given it
[00:23:25 –> 00:23:27] in spiritual direction or confession with someone
[00:23:27 –> 00:23:29] when someone,
[00:23:30 –> 00:23:32] like, maybe confess to something really intense,
[00:23:32 –> 00:23:36] and they want you to join in their panic of it
[00:23:36 –> 00:23:38] or want you to, like, join in their, like, shame of it
[00:23:38 –> 00:23:40] or disgust with themselves.
[00:23:40 –> 00:23:42] And then you offer them, like, a look of mercy
[00:23:42 –> 00:23:45] and the look of tenderness.
[00:23:45 –> 00:23:46] And it’s startling
[00:23:46 –> 00:23:48] because you’re like, “Oh,” like,
[00:23:48 –> 00:23:49] I remember, in spiritual direction, growing up,
[00:23:49 –> 00:23:51] like, I’m totally concerned about something,
[00:23:51 –> 00:23:52] but I’m looking at my spiritual director,
[00:23:52 –> 00:23:55] and he’s entirely unconcerned about it.
[00:23:55 –> 00:23:58] I was like, “Oh, wow,” like, “Maybe this is not a cause
[00:23:58 –> 00:24:01] for me to consider a vocational crisis ’cause of his face.”
[00:24:01 –> 00:24:03] And he’s like, “Okay, it’s okay.”
[00:24:03 –> 00:24:04] You’re like, “Oh,”
[00:24:04 –> 00:24:05] and you have this moment of, like,
[00:24:05 –> 00:24:09] maybe my feelings or my experience of this can be different.
[00:24:09 –> 00:24:11] And sometimes they’re, like, people want you
[00:24:11 –> 00:24:13] to join in they’re disgust for themselves
[00:24:13 –> 00:24:14] when they confess something.
[00:24:14 –> 00:24:15] And you’re like, “Oh, okay, we just have mercy here.”
[00:24:15 –> 00:24:17] And they’re, like startled, you know?
[00:24:17 –> 00:24:20] And so, again, they borrow your face.
[00:24:20 –> 00:24:22] They borrow your look of mercy,
[00:24:22 –> 00:24:24] and then, all of a sudden, maybe something shifts in them,
[00:24:24 –> 00:24:25] and they’re like,
[00:24:25 –> 00:24:27] “Well, maybe I don’t have to hate myself right now.
[00:24:27 –> 00:24:30] Maybe this disgust that I feel is important to repent of,
[00:24:30 –> 00:24:32] but it doesn’t have to define me.”
[00:24:32 –> 00:24:34] because of the face of the confessor who’s just like,
[00:24:34 –> 00:24:35] “Yeah, I don’t have to,
[00:24:35 –> 00:24:37] I’m not gonna join you in you’re disgust.
[00:24:37 –> 00:24:39] I’m actually and have mercy on you.”
[00:24:39 –> 00:24:41] And it feels, like, it feels, like disruptive,
[00:24:41 –> 00:24:45] but also, you’re like, “Wow, it can be different.”
[00:24:45 –> 00:24:45] Yeah.
[00:24:45 –> 00:24:46] And I love that, Father Angelus,
[00:24:46 –> 00:24:51] ’cause it’s funny, I’ve had this experience as a director
[00:24:51 –> 00:24:53] or especially, like, a retreat director,
[00:24:53 –> 00:24:55] just delighting in people and especially their prayer.
[00:24:55 –> 00:24:56] And people have told me
[00:24:56 –> 00:25:00] that I get more excited about their prayer than they do.
[00:25:00 –> 00:25:03] And it’s one of those things where if, in the direction,
[00:25:03 –> 00:25:05] if you embody, like,
[00:25:07 –> 00:25:08] yeah, just
[00:25:09 –> 00:25:11] a real faith and hope and love
[00:25:11 –> 00:25:13] of what’s happening in the other person.
[00:25:13 –> 00:25:15] Like, someone said, they’re like, “Hey, listen, you’re like,
[00:25:15 –> 00:25:16] you really believe this.
[00:25:16 –> 00:25:19] It’s very clear that you believe in my prayer more than me,
[00:25:19 –> 00:25:22] so I’m gonna take a chance to, like, step out on your faith
[00:25:22 –> 00:25:25] that you actually think this is real,
[00:25:25 –> 00:25:26] even when people struggle to believe.”
[00:25:26 –> 00:25:29] And I just love that because we can embody something
[00:25:29 –> 00:25:31] that, hey, listen, this is real,
[00:25:31 –> 00:25:32] and I need you to hold onto me.
[00:25:32 –> 00:25:34] We’re gonna step out on this together,
[00:25:34 –> 00:25:38] and you’re just gonna borrow my stability and my faith
[00:25:38 –> 00:25:39] in what God is doing.
[00:25:40 –> 00:25:44] And so I love that, being a spiritual father as well.
[00:25:44 –> 00:25:46] People often, like, “Okay, I don’t really believe,
[00:25:46 –> 00:25:47] but you do,
[00:25:47 –> 00:25:49] and I trust you and your fatherhood is real,
[00:25:49 –> 00:25:50] so I’m just gonna cling to you,
[00:25:50 –> 00:25:52] and you just keep leading me.”
[00:25:52 –> 00:25:55] And I just love that
[00:25:55 –> 00:25:58] because I think we do all that, we do that all the time.
[00:25:58 –> 00:26:01] Like, I might suffer and struggle,
[00:26:01 –> 00:26:04] but when we have people around us that buoy us up
[00:26:04 –> 00:26:06] and hold us and, like, carry us,
[00:26:07 –> 00:26:09] again, it’s this borrowing kind of concept.
[00:26:13 –> 00:26:14] Yeah.
[00:26:14 –> 00:26:15] And I do,
[00:26:15 –> 00:26:16] right, it’s like
[00:26:17 –> 00:26:18] we receive, we give.
[00:26:18 –> 00:26:20] That’s the movement we’re hoping for.
[00:26:22 –> 00:26:24] I do think it’s a great gift
[00:26:24 –> 00:26:26] that we can give to the world as Christians,
[00:26:26 –> 00:26:28] like, not just as friars, spiritual directors,
[00:26:28 –> 00:26:29] confessors, et cetera,
[00:26:29 –> 00:26:30] but
[00:26:32 –> 00:26:36] to be the people from which others can, if you will,
[00:26:36 –> 00:26:39] like, borrow hope and borrow peace
[00:26:39 –> 00:26:41] and even, like, and borrow faith, right?
[00:26:41 –> 00:26:44] Like, that we can be so,
[00:26:44 –> 00:26:45] you know,
[00:26:45 –> 00:26:47] built up
[00:26:47 –> 00:26:50] that, like, this can be a source of this for other people,
[00:26:53 –> 00:26:56] which I understand is, probably for a lot of listeners,
[00:26:56 –> 00:26:57] is like, “Okay, well,
[00:26:58 –> 00:27:02] I need to get my own house in order first.”
[00:27:02 –> 00:27:03] And I can,
[00:27:05 –> 00:27:07] I wasn’t leading to this,
[00:27:07 –> 00:27:10] but, you know, an image that we started out the year with
[00:27:12 –> 00:27:15] was Jesus in the boat with the disciples during the storm,
[00:27:15 –> 00:27:16] right?
[00:27:16 –> 00:27:16] And there’s this whole back and forth,
[00:27:16 –> 00:27:18] and Jesus is asleep,
[00:27:18 –> 00:27:21] and the question comes up of do you even care?
[00:27:21 –> 00:27:23] But I think that there’s something so interesting there
[00:27:23 –> 00:27:25] of, like, right, like, there’s the,
[00:27:25 –> 00:27:29] the waters are dysregulated, the waters are stormy.
[00:27:29 –> 00:27:30] And because of that,
[00:27:30 –> 00:27:31] because of what’s going on out there,
[00:27:31 –> 00:27:34] like, the disciples themselves, like, you know,
[00:27:34 –> 00:27:38] your sister’s kids become dysregulated and panicking
[00:27:38 –> 00:27:39] and scared and, like,
[00:27:40 –> 00:27:44] and then Jesus is there, just
[00:27:44 –> 00:27:47] being still and being confident and
[00:27:49 –> 00:27:52] having, like, confidence in his Father, right?
[00:27:52 –> 00:27:55] And, like, so, like, it’s, if you will, what they needed
[00:27:56 –> 00:27:57] was being offered.
[00:27:57 –> 00:28:00] Like, they could have received, in that moment,
[00:28:00 –> 00:28:02] and made their own Jesus’s peace,
[00:28:02 –> 00:28:03] Jesus’s confidence in the Father.
[00:28:04 –> 00:28:06] But they didn’t, they couldn’t.
[00:28:07 –> 00:28:09] But I do think this is
[00:28:10 –> 00:28:11] something being offered to us
[00:28:13 –> 00:28:16] amid the ongoing storms out there, right?
[00:28:16 –> 00:28:20] That there’s still a way in which we can turn to Jesus
[00:28:20 –> 00:28:24] who remains actually peaceful and confident in the world,
[00:28:24 –> 00:28:25] and that there’s actually a way
[00:28:25 –> 00:28:26] in which He can give us peace
[00:28:26 –> 00:28:27] because of His confidence in the Father.
[00:28:27 –> 00:28:28] And,
[00:28:29 –> 00:28:31] like, I didn’t use this language,
[00:28:31 –> 00:28:34] but I think that there’s something here, like with,
[00:28:36 –> 00:28:38] you know, like, the newborn baby Jesus.
[00:28:38 –> 00:28:41] I mentioned this in a homily to the postulants,
[00:28:41 –> 00:28:42] or to the guys on Christmas,
[00:28:42 –> 00:28:43] but, like there’s,
[00:28:45 –> 00:28:47] I dunno, just, like, when Jesus was born into the world,
[00:28:47 –> 00:28:49] like, just look at, like, how small, how peaceful,
[00:28:49 –> 00:28:51] how not in a hurry He came, how meek He came,
[00:28:51 –> 00:28:54] how confident He came, how vulnerable He came.
[00:28:55 –> 00:28:57] And there’s a way in which, like, Jesus, if you will, like,
[00:28:57 –> 00:28:59] in the midst of the world today,
[00:28:59 –> 00:29:01] we are prone, like the disciples in the boat,
[00:29:01 –> 00:29:04] to get chaotic and to get crazy and to get freaked out
[00:29:04 –> 00:29:06] and to go in this panic mode.
[00:29:09 –> 00:29:10] And it’s, like, it’s challenging,
[00:29:10 –> 00:29:12] but, like, Jesus, they’re, like,
[00:29:12 –> 00:29:14] that peace is still being offered to us today,
[00:29:14 –> 00:29:16] no matter, like, what’s going on in the world.
[00:29:16 –> 00:29:21] Like, we can have interior grace given, if you will,
[00:29:21 –> 00:29:23] interior calmness and peace regulation,
[00:29:24 –> 00:29:28] like, today, even though the storm is happening.
[00:29:28 –> 00:29:30] But we do have to go to Him and to ask
[00:29:30 –> 00:29:32] and to grow, I think, in,
[00:29:33 –> 00:29:36] like, why, why it’s still reasonable and honest
[00:29:36 –> 00:29:40] and the actual most correct disposition to have.
[00:29:40 –> 00:29:41] Father Innocent? – Yeah.
[00:29:41 –> 00:29:43] I mean, I just agree with that.
[00:29:43 –> 00:29:44] I agree 1,000%,
[00:29:44 –> 00:29:48] and I think of the Eucharist, right?
[00:29:48 –> 00:29:49] I think it’s Mary Caucus who says
[00:29:52 –> 00:29:54] that there’s just this profound reality
[00:29:54 –> 00:29:58] in what the Eucharist does for us every single day.
[00:29:58 –> 00:30:00] And what does it mean to live a eucharistic life?
[00:30:00 –> 00:30:03] Like, the God of the universe hides in a piece of bread,
[00:30:05 –> 00:30:08] and He’s present, body, blood, soul, and divinity, right?
[00:30:08 –> 00:30:12] And so His presence is so constant for us,
[00:30:12 –> 00:30:14] the tabernacle’s here for us.
[00:30:14 –> 00:30:15] And so just like the baby Jesus,
[00:30:15 –> 00:30:19] we go into, we go into the church or the chapel,
[00:30:19 –> 00:30:20] and we kneel before a tabernacle.
[00:30:20 –> 00:30:24] Like, there’s a real person there who gives us Himself.
[00:30:24 –> 00:30:27] And Mary Caucus talks about the Eucharist being so humble
[00:30:27 –> 00:30:29] and so not threatening.
[00:30:29 –> 00:30:31] He doesn’t, the Eucharist doesn’t even speak
[00:30:31 –> 00:30:36] because He doesn’t, Jesus doesn’t want even
[00:30:36 –> 00:30:39] audible words to scare people away.
[00:30:39 –> 00:30:43] But there’s just such a profound sense of peace
[00:30:43 –> 00:30:45] and silence and stillness there.
[00:30:45 –> 00:30:48] Like, the most stable place in the world
[00:30:48 –> 00:30:50] is before a tabernacle, where the living God
[00:30:50 –> 00:30:53] gives Himself in such profound,
[00:30:55 –> 00:30:56] like, just peace and presence.
[00:30:56 –> 00:30:58] Like, He’s there,
[00:30:58 –> 00:31:03] and in adoration with candles in a dimly-lit room,
[00:31:03 –> 00:31:05] Jesus gives Himself to you,
[00:31:05 –> 00:31:07] and He just draws us.
[00:31:07 –> 00:31:08] And
[00:31:09 –> 00:31:10] just like holding a child.
[00:31:10 –> 00:31:12] Everybody, when we hold a child,
[00:31:12 –> 00:31:14] you’re like, “Okay, I gotta be really careful,
[00:31:14 –> 00:31:16] I gotta be calm, I gotta be gentle.”
[00:31:16 –> 00:31:17] But, like, the same reality
[00:31:17 –> 00:31:19] happens in front of the Eucharist,
[00:31:19 –> 00:31:21] where we just wanna match and borrow
[00:31:21 –> 00:31:23] and really settle into His presence.
[00:31:25 –> 00:31:29] This has a real capacity in a mystical,
[00:31:29 –> 00:31:31] also in a physical way to change us
[00:31:33 –> 00:31:36] and dispel fear, dispel darkness,
[00:31:36 –> 00:31:38] dispel the dysregulations of our hearts.
[00:31:38 –> 00:31:39] And so I think it’s profoundly eucharistic.
[00:31:39 –> 00:31:44] The same reality is that it can really stabilize us
[00:31:44 –> 00:31:46] because of Jesus’s humility and the Eucharist
[00:31:46 –> 00:31:48] and the calm, the peace,
[00:31:48 –> 00:31:52] and really, like, the ultimate, the love that’s offered.
[00:31:52 –> 00:31:54] Again, I’m just moved by that.
[00:31:54 –> 00:31:56] If we could trust and make an act of faith
[00:31:56 –> 00:31:58] in what’s actually happening,
[00:31:58 –> 00:32:01] I do think, like, we would, like, be changed,
[00:32:01 –> 00:32:04] obviously spiritually and physically.
[00:32:04 –> 00:32:05] And not to be dramatic,
[00:32:05 –> 00:32:06] but just to add to that, like,
[00:32:06 –> 00:32:10] when the 5-year-old is dysregulated and crying
[00:32:10 –> 00:32:13] and all upset, in so many ways is eucharistic,
[00:32:13 –> 00:32:15] my sister walks up to him and offers,
[00:32:15 –> 00:32:17] says, “This is my body,”
[00:32:17 –> 00:32:19] like, “My body’s here for you,
[00:32:19 –> 00:32:20] and I’ll hold you,
[00:32:20 –> 00:32:21] and I’ll nurture you,
[00:32:21 –> 00:32:22] and I’ll comfort you
[00:32:22 –> 00:32:24] and bring you back to a place of peace.”
[00:32:24 –> 00:32:25] And so it’s interesting,
[00:32:25 –> 00:32:28] the most regulated body to ever live is Jesus, right?
[00:32:28 –> 00:32:31] And so in the midst of the mass, in the midst of adoration,
[00:32:31 –> 00:32:32] we show up all worked up.
[00:32:32 –> 00:32:35] We show up, like, dysregulated and hurting and worried
[00:32:35 –> 00:32:37] and afraid and anxious about things.
[00:32:37 –> 00:32:40] And Jesus is like, “This is my body,
[00:32:40 –> 00:32:42] my body that’s at peace, my body that’s safe,
[00:32:42 –> 00:32:43] my body that’s connected,
[00:32:43 –> 00:32:46] my body that has a lot of hope in God the Father
[00:32:46 –> 00:32:47] to provide for everything,” right?
[00:32:47 –> 00:32:49] And so it’s really beautiful.
[00:32:49 –> 00:32:52] And in another image, like, for the little kid
[00:32:52 –> 00:32:54] who’s learning to play outside,
[00:32:54 –> 00:32:56] and he falls,
[00:32:56 –> 00:33:00] and he hurts himself on the ground,
[00:33:00 –> 00:33:02] he immediately will turn to someone
[00:33:02 –> 00:33:04] who can translate it for him.
[00:33:04 –> 00:33:06] Like, “Did I just hurt myself?”
[00:33:07 –> 00:33:09] And, like, maybe he skins his knees,
[00:33:09 –> 00:33:10] and he’s crying,
[00:33:10 –> 00:33:12] but he’s not really crying because he’s uncomfortable,
[00:33:12 –> 00:33:13] but he’s trying to translate.
[00:33:13 –> 00:33:15] So he turns to his dad or turns to his mom.
[00:33:15 –> 00:33:16] And what does mom or dad say?
[00:33:16 –> 00:33:17] He’s like, “Hey, you’re okay, buddy. Just get up.
[00:33:17 –> 00:33:18] You’re fine.
[00:33:18 –> 00:33:20] Let me wipe that, like wipe your knee off.”
[00:33:20 –> 00:33:22] And then he’s like, “Oh, I’m okay.”
[00:33:22 –> 00:33:24] And then he can keep running, right?
[00:33:24 –> 00:33:26] But it’s funny, if he falls
[00:33:26 –> 00:33:28] and mom’s particularly, like, freaking out
[00:33:28 –> 00:33:29] ’cause every time the kid falls,
[00:33:29 –> 00:33:30] and then mom’s freaking out,
[00:33:30 –> 00:33:32] and then the kid’s like, “I’m not okay then.”
[00:33:32 –> 00:33:33] And he starts to cry more
[00:33:33 –> 00:33:36] because mom’s, like, really worried, you know?
[00:33:36 –> 00:33:38] And sometimes kids hurt themselves,
[00:33:38 –> 00:33:39] so mom is worried, I get that.
[00:33:39 –> 00:33:43] But, like, in the recognition that, like, “I’m falling,
[00:33:43 –> 00:33:45] I’m trying to play, I’m trying to have fun
[00:33:45 –> 00:33:47] with my brothers and sisters, trying to keep up with them,
[00:33:47 –> 00:33:48] and I fall,
[00:33:48 –> 00:33:49] and I look to mom or dad
[00:33:49 –> 00:33:50] to translate this experience with me.”
[00:33:50 –> 00:33:53] And, in so many ways, how often do we fall?
[00:33:53 –> 00:33:54] How often do we struggle?
[00:33:54 –> 00:33:55] How often do we,
[00:33:55 –> 00:33:58] and the looking to Jesus, to looking to the Father
[00:33:58 –> 00:34:00] to translate this for me, like.
[00:34:00 –> 00:34:04] And the Father’s like, “No, you’re okay, keep going.
[00:34:04 –> 00:34:04] It’s all good.”
[00:34:04 –> 00:34:06] Like, “Little buddy, get up.
[00:34:06 –> 00:34:07] We’ll wash you up,
[00:34:07 –> 00:34:09] and we’ll keep going.”
[00:34:09 –> 00:34:11] And then you learn how to, like, be uncomfortable
[00:34:11 –> 00:34:13] and, like, get hurt, if you will, and keep going
[00:34:13 –> 00:34:15] because of a translation,
[00:34:15 –> 00:34:17] because of a gaze that someone’s there with you
[00:34:17 –> 00:34:20] who offers you their body to be present,
[00:34:20 –> 00:34:22] and they offer you a translation.
[00:34:22 –> 00:34:24] Like, “What does this mean right now?
[00:34:24 –> 00:34:25] No, okay, I’m okay,
[00:34:25 –> 00:34:27] and I can keep going.”
[00:34:27 –> 00:34:28] I think it’s really profound.
[00:34:30 –> 00:34:32] The thing, yeah, I just love this,
[00:34:32 –> 00:34:34] but the thing that, it’s tough,
[00:34:34 –> 00:34:35] like, to do this also too, you know,
[00:34:35 –> 00:34:36] just to acknowledge that, but.
[00:34:38 –> 00:34:39] ‘Cause what this presupposes
[00:34:39 –> 00:34:41] is that we’re entering into prayer,
[00:34:41 –> 00:34:45] entering into, like, these spaces as children, right?
[00:34:45 –> 00:34:46] Not as, like, these adults or these people
[00:34:46 –> 00:34:48] who have figured everything out.
[00:34:48 –> 00:34:51] And I’m open to, yeah, just ask the Lord,
[00:34:51 –> 00:34:54] or, like, to lean on Him in this way.
[00:34:54 –> 00:34:57] ‘Cause, yeah, my temptation could be,
[00:34:57 –> 00:35:00] or, like, as I experience something difficult,
[00:35:00 –> 00:35:03] my temptation would be not to, like, lean on the Lord,
[00:35:03 –> 00:35:04] but, like, “I gotta figure this out.”
[00:35:04 –> 00:35:06] Like, “I gotta change my attitude,”
[00:35:06 –> 00:35:07] or, like, “There’s something wrong with me.”
[00:35:07 –> 00:35:10] And just, like, once again, we always go back to,
[00:35:11 –> 00:35:13] yeah, it’s just, like, my own,
[00:35:13 –> 00:35:15] like, me looking at my own stuff and judging my own stuff
[00:35:15 –> 00:35:19] as opposed to making that childlike turn,
[00:35:19 –> 00:35:21] and like, “Hey, dad, I’m hurting right now,”
[00:35:21 –> 00:35:23] or, like, “Am I okay,” you know?
[00:35:23 –> 00:35:24] And just, like, trusting that the Father
[00:35:24 –> 00:35:28] is going to provide not just this regulating self,
[00:35:28 –> 00:35:30] but just the truth of who I am in His eyes.
[00:35:30 –> 00:35:32] And that’s just tough sometimes,
[00:35:32 –> 00:35:34] especially, like, in the midst of the storm
[00:35:34 –> 00:35:35] as the disciples are there,
[00:35:35 –> 00:35:36] and they’re freaking out
[00:35:36 –> 00:35:38] ’cause it feels like we’re about to drown,
[00:35:38 –> 00:35:41] and the Lord is sleeping, you know?
[00:35:42 –> 00:35:43] But I think it’s good to acknowledge that,
[00:35:43 –> 00:35:47] but also to just, to even maybe recognize, like, “God, I,”
[00:35:47 –> 00:35:49] like, “Lord, I don’t have that childlike heart,
[00:35:49 –> 00:35:50] the childlike disposition.”
[00:35:50 –> 00:35:51] Like, “Can you help me there?”
[00:35:51 –> 00:35:53] Or, like, “I just feel like I have to figure things out
[00:35:53 –> 00:35:54] all the time,
[00:35:54 –> 00:35:55] and is that true?”
[00:35:56 –> 00:36:01] And just to rest with the Lord in that space as we try to
[00:36:01 –> 00:36:04] make attempts to be more free in our articulation
[00:36:04 –> 00:36:07] of where we’re at emotionally or where we’re at spiritually
[00:36:07 –> 00:36:10] or, like, even too, like, in front of the Eucharist,
[00:36:10 –> 00:36:13] where, like, you’re just really quiet,
[00:36:13 –> 00:36:15] and, “I just would like to hear something from You,”
[00:36:15 –> 00:36:16] you know?
[00:36:16 –> 00:36:18] And so just to, yeah, I just offer that too
[00:36:18 –> 00:36:20] just as a way of looking at,
[00:36:20 –> 00:36:22] and just more so, like, recognizing sometimes
[00:36:22 –> 00:36:24] it’s not that easy to do.
[00:36:25 –> 00:36:27] Yeah, I think that’s great, guys.
[00:36:27 –> 00:36:30] And, like, I appreciate the directions it’s gone into.
[00:36:30 –> 00:36:32] And I think it’s beautiful,
[00:36:32 –> 00:36:34] and I think it’s something, you know,
[00:36:34 –> 00:36:36] obviously with what Father Angelus was saying,
[00:36:38 –> 00:36:40] certainly like John, you know, like, resting his chest
[00:36:40 –> 00:36:41] on the heart of Jesus,
[00:36:41 –> 00:36:44] like, it takes another interpretation
[00:36:44 –> 00:36:46] or a lens to look at that at,
[00:36:47 –> 00:36:49] but, like, yeah, this is my body,
[00:36:49 –> 00:36:50] and how Jesus gives us His body,
[00:36:50 –> 00:36:52] and He remains with us.
[00:36:54 –> 00:36:55] Yeah.
[00:36:55 –> 00:36:56] And it is hard,
[00:36:56 –> 00:36:57] and that’s the thing, right?
[00:36:57 –> 00:37:00] Like with, like, the whole storm and the boat thing,
[00:37:00 –> 00:37:01] like, those were real storms in the boat,
[00:37:01 –> 00:37:03] and the water was coming over,
[00:37:03 –> 00:37:04] and
[00:37:06 –> 00:37:09] it was extremely humanly reasonable
[00:37:09 –> 00:37:10] to freak out and to panic,
[00:37:12 –> 00:37:15] but yet, there’s something greater being offered
[00:37:15 –> 00:37:16] that we have access to.
[00:37:17 –> 00:37:19] But, right, like,
[00:37:19 –> 00:37:20] and that’s where I think the borrowing thing’s important
[00:37:20 –> 00:37:21] ’cause, you know,
[00:37:22 –> 00:37:24] the disciples in the boat there, like,
[00:37:25 –> 00:37:27] they were left to their own devices.
[00:37:27 –> 00:37:28] They were in trouble,
[00:37:29 –> 00:37:30] right?
[00:37:30 –> 00:37:32] But they were in the boat with the one who can,
[00:37:32 –> 00:37:35] who has authority to calm the seas with the word.
[00:37:35 –> 00:37:36] And Jesus remains with us,
[00:37:38 –> 00:37:39] you know?
[00:37:39 –> 00:37:40] You could even say, like,
[00:37:40 –> 00:37:43] He gives His body seemingly asleep, very much alive,
[00:37:43 –> 00:37:44] but in the most holy Eucharist,
[00:37:44 –> 00:37:46] in the tabernacle, in each of our churches.
[00:37:48 –> 00:37:50] And there’s this, there’s a calm, there’s a presence,
[00:37:50 –> 00:37:53] there’s a confidence being communicated there.
[00:37:53 –> 00:37:55] We receive Him into our very selves.
[00:37:57 –> 00:37:59] And I do think that’s the invitation,
[00:37:59 –> 00:38:02] particularly in times of adoration, in times of,
[00:38:02 –> 00:38:05] when we receive Jesus in the Eucharist,
[00:38:06 –> 00:38:08] we use the language of borrowing,
[00:38:08 –> 00:38:09] but asking, right, like,
[00:38:09 –> 00:38:12] to receive what we can’t give ourselves.
[00:38:12 –> 00:38:14] And we don’t have to give ourselves to ask for His peace,
[00:38:14 –> 00:38:15] His confidence, His hope
[00:38:17 –> 00:38:19] so that His life can be lived in us.
[00:38:19 –> 00:38:22] And I think that’s part of the dignity that we all have
[00:38:22 –> 00:38:23] and the beauty of our faith
[00:38:23 –> 00:38:25] that we actually have access to that.
[00:38:26 –> 00:38:27] Not that it’s easy,
[00:38:27 –> 00:38:28] but,
[00:38:28 –> 00:38:32] like, again, it’s grace and it’s God,
[00:38:32 –> 00:38:34] and, yeah, anyway.
[00:38:34 –> 00:38:35] And even the interpretive stuff,
[00:38:35 –> 00:38:36] I would encourage people, like,
[00:38:36 –> 00:38:38] what Angelus was saying about
[00:38:39 –> 00:38:41] how does Jesus wanna interpret the things happening,
[00:38:41 –> 00:38:42] or looking to another.

[00:38:58 –> 00:38:59] the safety and the connection of the Lord
[00:38:59 –> 00:39:00] and to be able to offer that,
[00:39:01 –> 00:39:03] it takes work, right?
[00:39:04 –> 00:39:07] It’s not necessarily just, like, man,
[00:39:07 –> 00:39:08] in the moment of being triggered,
[00:39:08 –> 00:39:11] but how can I, how can I, like, be attentive,
[00:39:11 –> 00:39:12] more attentive to my heart,
[00:39:12 –> 00:39:14] more attentive to like, wow, like,
[00:39:14 –> 00:39:15] I wanna get up every day and start the day
[00:39:15 –> 00:39:18] by, like, proclaiming a safety and a connection with God
[00:39:18 –> 00:39:20] that allows me to be safe with Him,
[00:39:20 –> 00:39:22] so then when I face the difficulty,
[00:39:22 –> 00:39:26] or the storm throughout the day that interiorly has me,
[00:39:26 –> 00:39:28] I can have this, like, memory of like, “Okay, Lord,
[00:39:28 –> 00:39:31] I made a choice today that I wanna do the work
[00:39:31 –> 00:39:33] to remain safe with you.
[00:39:33 –> 00:39:35] I wanna do the work to remain in my heart with you
[00:39:35 –> 00:39:37] so I can
[00:39:37 –> 00:39:40] navigate storms
[00:39:40 –> 00:39:41] in a way that I can stay connected
[00:39:41 –> 00:39:43] and then be able to receive what I need to receive
[00:39:43 –> 00:39:45] and then give what I need to give, right?
[00:39:45 –> 00:39:48] And so it’s an invitation to the spiritual work,
[00:39:48 –> 00:39:50] to the emotional work, to the reality of, like, just,
[00:39:50 –> 00:39:52] I have, sometimes, have people journal, like,
[00:39:52 –> 00:39:54] how much of your day did you spend
[00:39:54 –> 00:39:55] in a safe, regulated space?
[00:39:55 –> 00:39:58] Or how much of your day did you spend dysregulated
[00:39:58 –> 00:40:00] in an inner storm
[00:40:00 –> 00:40:04] that you may or may not have been aware of, right?
[00:40:04 –> 00:40:05] And so if people can start to navigate,
[00:40:05 –> 00:40:07] like, “Man, yeah, I had,
[00:40:07 –> 00:40:10] I spent half of my day just really disconnected
[00:40:10 –> 00:40:11] and all worked up.”
[00:40:11 –> 00:40:13] And then the reality of, like,
[00:40:13 –> 00:40:15] “Oh, can we be curious about that?
[00:40:15 –> 00:40:16] Okay, what do you need from God right now?”
[00:40:16 –> 00:40:18] “Well, I need to come back down.
[00:40:18 –> 00:40:20] I need to be able to, like, be acknowledged
[00:40:20 –> 00:40:22] and name what happened to me and why I got upset
[00:40:22 –> 00:40:26] and to be able to receive what I need to receive there.”
[00:40:26 –> 00:40:28] So, again, the reference to the work,
[00:40:28 –> 00:40:30] it takes a bit of work,
[00:40:30 –> 00:40:33] and, mainly, at least initially, it’s an awareness.
[00:40:33 –> 00:40:34] Like, “What’s happening to me?

Key Takeaways
- Peace in Jesus is not something we have to manufacture on our own. It is a gift given and guarding hearts and minds.
- Borrowing peace from Jesus means receiving His calm, confidence, mercy, and trust in the Father. Peace is rooted in trust.
- Jesus gives peace in the middle of the storm, not only after the storm is gone, because His peace is “not as the world gives.”
- The Eucharist is one of the deepest places where we receive the peaceful presence of Christ. In the Eucharist, we receive the gift of Christ himself, “who offers himself and becomes our peace,” and this is the “culmination of our peace.”
- We can also lend peace, hope, mercy, and stability to others when we are rooted in Jesus, because peace is not only inner comfort, but also reconciliation and peacemaking.
- Finding peace in Christ begins with noticing where we are anxious, afraid, reactive, or disconnected, and bringing that honestly to Him, trusting that Christ’s peace can guard our hearts even when we cannot.
What This Means for Prayer and Daily Life
If you do not feel peaceful, start by being honest with Jesus.
Pray simply: “Jesus, I do not have peace right now. I feel anxious, afraid, overwhelmed, or stirred up. Can I borrow Your peace? Can You give me what I cannot give myself?”
That kind of prayer is not childish in a bad way. It is childlike. It acknowledges that we are not meant to carry everything alone, and that the Lord leaves His disciples His own peace.
This episode reminds us that peace in Jesus is not pretending everything is fine. It is letting the Lord be with us in the middle of what is not fine. Like the disciples in the storm, we can turn toward Jesus and ask Him to share His calm, His confidence, and His trust in the Father so that the peace of God can guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
In daily life, this can begin with noticing what is happening inside us. Am I reacting out of fear? Am I shutting down? Am I trying to control everything? Am I asking Jesus for help, or am I trying to force peace by myself?
Finding peace in Christ can be as simple as sitting before the Eucharist, slowing your breathing, and saying, “Jesus, let Your peace hold me.” The storm may not disappear immediately, but your heart can begin to borrow from His steadiness. And because Eucharist is the gift of Christ himself who becomes our peace, this is not only a mental exercise, it is receiving what Christ offers.
And as we receive peace from Him, we learn how to offer it to others. We do not always have to fix people. Sometimes we are simply invited to be calm, present, merciful, and steady enough that someone else can borrow peace from us, because peace is also the work of charity and reconciliation.
FAQ Section: Borrowing Peace
Borrowing peace from Jesus means receiving the calm, confidence, mercy, and trust that we do not have on our own. The episode describes this as letting Jesus give us His peace in the places where we feel anxious, overwhelmed, or afraid, peace that Christ leaves and gives differently than the world.
Jesus gives peace by sharing His own relationship with the Father and drawing us into His presence. The friars especially point to prayer, the Eucharist, and adoration as places where Christ quietly stabilizes and strengthens the heart, since in the Eucharist we receive the gift of Christ himself, who becomes our peace.
You may struggle to find peace because you are trying to create it by yourself instead of receiving it from Jesus. The episode invites us to notice where we are anxious, reactive, or shut down, and to bring that honestly to the Lord, trusting that God’s peace guards hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
A Catholic reflection on peace begins with the truth that peace is a gift from Christ, not just a feeling or mood. Peace is not merely the absence of war; it involves the right order of persons and the work of justice and charity. Earthly peace is the image and fruit of the peace of Christ.
Begin by telling Jesus exactly what is happening in your heart and asking Him to share His peace with you. The friars suggest that we can “borrow” His calm and confidence, especially in prayer and before the Eucharist, so that the peace of God can guard you even when your understanding and feelings are unsettled.
The Eucharist is connected to peace because Jesus gives Himself to us and becomes our peace. In it is accomplished reconciliation with God and with others, and Christ offers Himself in a way that is humble and quiet, making it a true, steady source of peace.
Yes, when we receive peace from Jesus, we can become a peaceful presence for others. The friars describe how a calm, steady person can help someone else feel safe, received, and less alone, because Christ’s peace reconciles and equips peacemakers.
